Taronga Western Plains Zoo South African rhinos coming to Aus

It's a great idea for conservation purposes, but... EIGHTY?? And that's just initially, what about when (or if) they start breeding? Where do they plan on keeping them all? :p

Personally I think it is a good idea to have a sizeable population in a more secure place as an insurance.

Why doesn't the Australian government first invest in their own native endangered species, there are for sure more than enough species that need more attention than white rhinos....

What if they escape and become an invasive species? :)

Schttt!!! Don't make our friends from OZ scared....;)

To be serious: I'm positively amazed, that Australian authorities gave (or will give) their okay to this import when I look at the restrictions for other (odd-toed) ungulates.
Still, even if there was a health problem (virus from soil?) in Dubbo, I think that Australia in general is a very good place to keep (climatic conditions) and breed rhinos and safe them from extinction.

Possibly some sort of crlostridial disease which has killed Rinos in the past. Authorities either dont know or want say what it was and if they have a solution.
