Unless they were bred there in the 1970's, to my knowledge Howletts has never bred hunting dogs. They currently have a small surplus bachelor group, but these only arrived in the last couple of years. Port Lympne had only sporadic success (infanticide, surviving pups removed for hand-rearing) until the late 90's when they finally got it right and started to produced large, mother-reared litters (the last litter was hand-reared, but not due to infanticide).

South lakes may well be able to get hunting dogs, but I suspect they will only be a single-sex group for now. Time is really ticking for the collections with these adult dogs that have so far not bred, it will be interesting to see if the conventional zoo/wildlife park enclosures produce successful litters. I would put money on Knowsley being the next UK collection to join the Port Lympne and WMSP in successfully raising litters of pups.

How long have Knowsley housed wild dogs now?? I think its been nearly 2 years now, have their been any signs of them breeding??

I think South Lakes would only get a single sex group as they have done with the giraffes and the spectacled bears before the male arrived.

Has any body heard what is going in the cheetah enclosure,or any other new arrivals as the web site not giving much away at the moment?

Has there been any news on whether either the spectacled bears or any of rhinos have given birth yet? From the website they seemed to say that one of the white rhinos was due early/ mid 2008

The Cheetah enclosure according to the new guide book will be home to the Pygmy Hippos and Mandrill, their enclosure will then be used for Capybara,Capuchin Monkeys and Spider Monkeys, also it seems at some point Squirrel Monkeys are going to be added into the Rodrigues Fruit Bats enclosure.

they do seem to like mixed exhibits but i doubt they'd mix animals that would cause harm to each other. I'm not completely sure moving the pygmy hippos to the old cheetah exhibit with the mandrills will be a wise idea. Does anyone know if they manage to co-exist peacefully in their old/present enclosure?

It has been stated quite often on this forum, that the image that is used on the website, shows the hippo 'yawning' at a mandrill, so there has been some aggression at some point...

i got the shock of my life i just went on expecting nothing and it was just there in the corner. Was worried though at first because the calf was in one corner and she was in another so thought she may have rejected it. She seems to have gone back to it now so everything looks ok at the mo

the webcam has been moved from Tala's stall back to Ntombi and her calves stall. Is there a possibility she has lost the calf? May just be that nothings happened but would have thought it would have stayed till she gave birth

capuchins can be very aggressive....is there a precedent to mixing them with spider monkeys?

There has, but I cannot think where it has been done. Spiders are big enough to look after themselves. I have seen spiders and squirrels mixed at the old Gatwick Zoo. I would have expected this to be more of a problem.

Squirrels and Rodriguez bats????

Spiders and Caps

Just following on from my previous post I believe that a NZ zoo has mixed Black-caps and Black-handeds.
