Highland Streaked Tenrecs have been bred for the first time at Sparsholt: The adult Tenrecs originated from Endangered Madagascar and are apparently only the 2nd group in Europe (the others being at Ostrava)

See that fact surprises me, I would have thought that if any Czech zoo had an obscure tenrec species then it would be Plzen! ;) :p

It's a great success, in public collections it may be the 2nd group but privately there are certainly more. It seems endangered madagascar's tenrec's were spread throughout a lot of collections.

I believe Plzen *did* also get some Highlands, but that the population failed to survive.

I'm not up with the play here obviously -- does this last sentence mean Endangered Madagascar is defunct, or do you just mean they have sent tenrecs to other collections?

The owner moved abroad I understand and he moved his collection between various zoos, including his streaked, greater and common tenrecs :D

Sparsholt College have successfully bred the green tiger beetle (Cicindela campestris) for the first time in captivity. The beetles arrived in spring last year and were moved into a dedicated breeding enclosure where several larvae have been produced. They have successfully survived their first winter and should emerge as adult beetles next year.

This breeding trial is taking place with the hope of establishing the methods for breeding tiger beetles; this will then allow a breeding programme for the heath tiger beetle (Cicindela sylvatica) to begin. The heath tiger beetle is one of Britain's rarest insects and is found on only a handful of sites in southern England. Rather than risk taking heath tiger beetles from the wild when so little is known of their breeding and development behaviour, the more common green tiger beetle wass used to gain experience.

The breeding programme for the heath tiger beetle will be run as a cooperative between Sparsholt College and the Species Recovery Trust.

I went looking for Heath Tiger beetles recently at a known site, but with no success. Will be trying again though. I quite often see the Green Tiger beetle.
