Jalu died at Ragunan in June 1994. Originally captured in Sumatra.

Dusun died at Way Kambas in February 2001. Originally captured in Malaysia, and went from Melaka Zoo to Ragunan.

It is a shame the program went international, did not take in the experience achieved at Port Lympne Zoo with the first overseas pairings and ultimately - admittedly ground-breaking research at Cincinnati Zoo - led to all Sumatran rhino able to travel retransfer to Indonesia.

I am not saying we have wasted those years, no it was probably integral that a zoo community came on board to provide financial back up and support for in fundamental situ conservation and capacity building.

We are now down to 60-80 Sumatran rhino globally from estimated 400-600 a decade or more ago. It is 10 past 12 now ...., and time is ticking! We need that break-through in population stabilisation and growth and effective protection for some of the last areas where Sumatran rhino do exist.

Aside from the Sumatran, Ragunan also keep an white rhinoceros in the 1990s.
Rookmaaker's book on captive rhinos (1998) lists three white rhinos at Ragunan Zoo
  1. Male arrived 2nd August 1976
  2. Female arrived 2nd August 1976
  3. Female arrived 15th November 1995
Taman Safari Bogor also keep an Sumatran rhinoceros in the 1990s too.
Rookmaaker's book on captive rhinos (1998) lists three Sumatran rhinos at Taman Safari during the 1990s:-
  1. Female "Dalu"; arrived 30th November 1988; died 27th July 1993 (caught 8th July 1998)
  2. Male "Romi"; arrived 2nd September 1991 (caught 18th April 1991)
