I am planning a two-week road trip around lake Michigan and looking for any tips and advice. I plan on trying to see rarer animals like genet, black wildebeest, aardwolf, macaques, etc. I plan on seeing Brookfield, Boulder Ridge, Garlyn to name a few. Anybody have suggestions/tips on how to see these animals such as feeding times?

All the way around Lake Michigan, or just a part of it? That's a huge area. How far away from the lake are you willing to go for these rarities?

It’s pretty reasonable for two weeks. I’ve done more ill-advised drives on what amounted to long weekends. The genet at Brookfield aren’t the hardest to see. Seeing awake is kind of a luck of the draw thing.

As for Brookfield’s other rarities, last I heard the pangolins (and sengi) were most active around feeding at 3:30. Prairie chickens have a pretty straightforward aviary so long as it’s warm enough to be out. You will see the koalas but seeing them awake is another question entirely. If anyone has tips for that I’d love to hear it. Dolphins have a regular show. (I consider them a regional rarity.)

Shedd’s rarities are rather hard to miss, with the exceptions of the gilded catfish who likes to hang out in the back of his tank and the giant centipede that I don’t think any Zoochatter has actually seen. I suppose that the sea otters aren’t always visible but give them three minutes and they’ll be back out.

Potawatomi only has the genets as far as rarities go. Easy skip if that’s the purpose of your trip. (And, frankly, even if it isn’t.)

I don’t go to Lincoln Park enough to have tips but please linger at the mouse exhibit at the nocturnal house it always makes me weirdly happy.

I dont plan on going further east than boulder ridge park, further south than Merriville. I plan on east and south will be another trip.
