Sunset Zoo Sunset Zoo News

The zoo just revealed their 30 year master plan (full 30 minute video is in the Sunset Zoo media gallery) and they have some awesome plans for the zoo including a mixed giraffe hoofstock exhibit and a lion exhibit that is connected to a restaurant with viewing windows.

Also the Caribbean Flamingos are nesting and arguments and fights often break out. They're nesting right next to the fence under a weeping willow which has been such a delight to watch. The Red Crowned Cranes are sitting on two eggs but they are likely not fertile. The keeper told me they were having trouble and were possibly considering AI. It's too cold for some bird species like the Straw Necked Ibis, kookaburra and turacos to come outside. That's about it. I will be uploading pics at some point soon.

White handed Gibbon Birth

The parents of the gibbon are Dempsy and Leslie and recently gave birth to their second baby in three years. The new baby’s name is Neta and it was born at the end of April. It says the baby is doing well,m but the sex is unable to be determined until a full physical occurs on the baby’s first birthday.

Caribbean Flamingo Hatches

The Zoo says on July 6 it saw the entrance of another new baby into the world, a Caribbean flamingo named Ringo. It says Ringo was named by the South American Keeper, Trevor Smith.

A date has been set for the opening of Expedition Asia - April 9. This new complex will connect to the otter and red panda exhibits. The enclosures for the Malayan Tigers and Sloth Bears will also be rotational through a catwalk build into the area that will be viewable to the public. They predict the animals will move in late February to give them time to acclimatise to their new exhibits: Sunset Zoo's Expedition Asia provides new exhibits, experience

As a former Manhattan resident, I can't wait to see what it will finally look like! I wonder what they will do with the Cinereous Vultures, Tufted Deer & Red-Crowned Cranes as I looked back at the master plan and didn't see them included on it.

I visited this zoo with my wife yesterday and have uploaded 13 photos of the new Expedition Asia exhibit complex to the gallery. I have a couple more of close-up shots of animals that I can add, just wanted to get the main photos of exhibits and what not posted first. I will say that it definitely stands out from the rest of the zoo in a fantastic way. It for sure will grow up over time as the trees planted get larger and will look pretty good when they do as right now the exhibits do look a little barren with little shade. But overall I think this is a step in the right direction for this zoo.

I did see that their next projects are updating the outside portion of their chimpanzee habitat, and their major renovation coming up includes adding their giraffe savannah.

The Australian Walk-a-bout was closed during our visit and we were not able to go inside of the American Flamingo aviary.

Even with seeing the fancy new exhibit complex, my highlight of the day was probably seeing two very active Spotted Hyenas, Charlie and Nia. Of all the places I've been so far the hyenas are usually off exhibit or hiding pretty well that I haven't been able to get good photos.
