Under the waters of eastern Lake Ontario lie historic shipwrecks that tell the story of America’s history. These waters were transportation and trade routes for Indigenous Peoples and early European explorers. They were centers for military conflicts from land and sea during the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812. And they were critical to the development of the American West and the nation’s industrial core.

In 2019, in response to a sanctuary nomination by local communities and New York State, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA announced) its intent to designate a new national marine sanctuary in New York’s eastern Lake Ontario. In July 2021, NOAA published and accepted public comments on a draft management plan and draft environmental impact statement for the proposed sanctuary.

NOAA is now accepting public comments on a proposed rule for the proposed Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary.
