Surabaya Zoo

Hi ,Just a quick note ..I spent a couple of days at Surabaya Zoo last month ..I spent with the vets and zookeepers alike ..Behind the scenes and well in the faces of all ..I have to say ,yes its been a very troubled zoo over the years..Habitats ,some not so modern nor too spacious compared to what we build and know today ..The changes that are taking place are very noticeable and most welcomed . Old habitats are being bulldozed to make way for bigger and more natural .The diets are very good and fresh foods of right properties and choice are being fed . They are building a new butchery and new habitats for Jaguars ,other big cats ..The animals have got very good vet care . ( The vets do have vast experience and do give a damn ).I was two days testing for T.B in Proboscis Monkeys .. I hear ans see all the petitions to close the zoo ..I see photos of prior days with gaunt and sickly Tigers .All of this is true ,true ..Its not happening now and changes are taking place very rapidly..I did put some pics on my fb if you can find them your welcome to see https://www.facebook.com/greenwoodtony ...Im happy to answer questions on what ive seen first hand ..I work and live 2 hours away from this zoo ..I have no hidden agenda in what i write ,just telling you from the zoos footpath the situation ,not from my arm chair..Hope this helps a little ..Its all very political and grubby with management ,but that's not my concern ..Seeing the animals are fine is all i care about .. Thanks, Zoo Int!

I have tried on the FB to convince those in Indonesia what is really happening at Surabaya Zoo and how the current management is slowly working to mend the errant old ways (even by way of keeping staff that need to acquire a whole new commitment and pride in dealing with their charges). The over-crowding in some species (being dealt with), cramped cages (being dealt with), new more natural habitats and enclosures (being done as we speak). Yet it seems even the local media have not yet woken up to this new reality.

Thanks again for pointing this one out to an unsuspecting audience here.

I can only tell you how i saw it

I can only tell how i saw the Surabaya Zoo and what i found from speaking very openly with the vets ,keepers and other staff. We are all pretty clued up people in Zoos and animal world . It is what it is ,its an old Zoo that used to be one of the best ..Management, owners and business partners didn't seem to be loving each other any more ..So the park went into free fall . Its hit rock bottom and now climbing back up ..The Zoo is a highly sort after bit of real-estate ,but that aside it will soon get back to its greater days . I was told an investor from Indonesia wants to buy the Zoo and totally rebuild it ..The here and now facts are all the animals appear to be in good hands ..I didn't see any over crowding ..A collection of some Pelicans are being sent to other Zoos ,as are some Proboscis Monkeys ..A few other animals are going to other zoos on breeding programs ..Its all getting tidied up and a lot of work being done from what i can see . The meals i took special note and went behind the scenes to have a good inspection..Not a rotten piece meat nor a dodgy banana ..In-fact the keepers were very fussy and they do care very much about the zoo and its animals . I did note an Otter that needed a better habitat and a few others that were not real special ..I was assured and shown plans ,they cages are getting rebuilt ..I saw with my own eyes ,even helped off load a truck with steel and wire ..So in the real world where i live ,its all being addressed and animals are cared for both medical and food /water ..I have no need to tell other than what ive seen ..Believe me ,if it were different story to tell id be telling it .. One thing that really glares at me is the entrance cost ..Its $2.00 per head ..Cant do much renovations or feed too many animals with that collective sum ..So the money is coming from some where to rebuild and feed ..In truth ,its not the forgotten zoo the media all write about ..Much is being done behind the scenes ..

I was told that the Taman Safari group might become involved fully at Surabaya to reinstate it?

As I have suggested: it would be nice to send some proboscis monkeys overseas too to address the surplus problem. Good candidate would be Singapore and perhaps longer down the line Apenheul Zoo (and a few other European candidates) and would make good partners for collaborative work on primates and S.E. Asian wildlife.

I agree entry fee is minimal, but for Indonesian standards I am not sure what is reasonable and gets paying zoo visitors thru the gates in numbers. Conservation awareness and education are obviously issues that need to be addressed.
