Sydney Aquarium Sydney Aquarium

Sea Life Sydney's three (1.2) Leopard Sharks are participating in a programme aiming to restore wild populations of this species in the Indo-Pacific. The founder eggs were initially exported to West Papua, Indonesia in August 2022. The eggs hatched and the first sharks were released. An additional shipment occurred this year with two female sharks hatching. It is predicted that at the release site, Raj Ampat, only 20 wild sharks remain so the aquarium is continuing to work with the StAR Project to restore this species. If I remember correctly as well, Sea World Gold Coast are also participating with this initiative: The StAR Project - ReShark and SEA LIFE Sydney's breeding program for endangered zebra sharks

Update from my visit (17/11/2024):

I had a brief, but enjoyable visit to SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium on 17/11/2024. Not too much news to report, other than a new rock pool zone opens tomorrow. It will feature sea stars, crabs, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, and fish species.

Thank you to @WhistlingKite24, @Great Argus and @ralph for their much appreciated help with species ID.

11 species ID to go if anyone’s up for a challenge. I’ve not had much luck from the aquarium’s website.

Absolutely incredible news. Sea Life Sydney have successfully bred their first Grey Nurse Shark pup. It was born at the aquarium four months ago to female Mary Lou with three potential sires in the oceanarium. Considering how unsustainable the east coast wild populations are of this species for the aquarium trade and how rare a captive breeding is for this species this is particularly noteworthy news: SURPRISE! It’s a Baby Shark!

SEALIFE Sydney have acquired at least one Australian Flatback Sea Turtle (Natator depressus) which is shown on their current Facebook story. I assume (although I could be wrong) that this is one of the individuals that was formerly at SEALIFE Melbourne.
