Am guessing it's probably a bit late now, but just in case anyone in interested, there is a PubSci talk tomorrow night (20th Aug) at the The Old Kings Head near London Bridge, about Jamrach's Menagerie and exotic animals in Victorian London.

Unfortunately the PubSci website seems to be down for me, but they have info posted on their twitter feed, with a link that may work in good time (it was working perfectly fine earlier )

(wasn't too sure where to put this, but the UK forum seemed appropriate. If it's in the wrong place please feel free to move it)

Thanks for drawing this talk to my attention; I'll try to come along.

I cannot access the website either; do you know what time the talk starts ?

the link worked for me. There's a picture of the menagerie on there as well.

On Wednesday 20th August we are pleased to have Elle Larsson providing a fascinating insight into the history of natural science collecting and trade.

The Victorian period was an age of empire and the exotic animal trade quickly became a new and important part of empire building. Animal capture represented the conquest of distant and exotic lands and the display of exotic specimens, in the emerging zoological collections and natural history museums across the country, acted as demonstrations of imperial might. Interest and demand led the trade to become the business of specialist traders; men like Charles Jamrach, who became one of the most renowned naturalists and dealers in exotic animals and birds of the Victorian period. This is his story.

Elle Larsson is currently a postgraduate student at Royal Holloway, University of London. Her research interests lie broadly in nineteenth and twentieth century British History, with particular interest the presence of animals and what looking at human-animal relationships can tell us about the past.

Join us from 6pm for a 7pm start at the Old King’s Head, near London Bridge station.

As usual, the event is free, but we have a whip-round to cover expenses.

Rather than start a whole new thread, I thought I'd add this here (maybe one of the mods would like to rename the thread? Thanks! )

The NHM Museum at Tring have a couple of interesting talks coming up, 'Walter Rothschild: the Man, the Museum and the Menagerie' and 'Architecture and History of London Zoo'. Details in the link:
