Australian Sea Lion Pup

A male Australian sea lion pup has been born to Charlie and Nala, and has been named ‘Torre’.

The newest addition to our marine mammal family

Torre is the fourth generation of his family to live at Taronga Zoo. His mother, Nala, was born at Taronga Zoo in 2009; her mother, Kira, was born at Taronga Zoo in 2002; and her mother, Kasha, arrived at Taronga Zoo in the 1990s. The keeper in this article says Kasha was rescued by Taronga Zoo; but I was previously told she was from the Adelaide Zoo (and a sister of Portia at Underwater World/Sea Life Sunshine Coast).

Torre is the third birth in recent years. Lexie, who is a rescue animal born 2002, gave birth to Max in 2015; and Moby in 2017.

Taronga Announces the Birth of Three Rare Tiger Cubs

We are so excited to announce the birth of three critically endangered Sumatran Tiger cubs at Taronga Zoo Sydney! With as few as 350 Sumatran Tigers left in the wild, the birth of these adorable cubs is an incredible success story for this rare species.

First-time mother Kartika gave birth to the cubs on Thursday 17 January. The cubs’ father, Clarence, was carefully introduced to Kartika in October 2018 to determine their compatibility.

The biggest threats to this species in the wild is habitat loss due to unsustainable palm oil plantations and the illegal wildlife trade. To help prevent the extinction of this species, Taronga is part of a regional breeding program – since October 1980, 21 tigers have been born at Taronga.

Our Carnivore Keepers are happy to report that first-time mum Kartika is doing well. It’s still early days in the cubs' development and keepers are monitoring their progress closely. Right now the cubs are growing and suckling for milk.

Keepers expect that over the next 4-6 weeks, the cubs will find their feet, groom and play more with each other, and clamber out of the nest – Kartika will have a hard time keeping them under control!

The cubs, yet to be named, are expected to make their first appearance in late March, however you can view them via CCTV footage at Taronga Zoo Sydney.

I can remember when Clarence was born at Australia Zoo, can’t believe he has now sired his own cubs.

Very unexpected news! Didn’t know they were breeding them lately. Well done to Taronga and Kartika! ;) Great to see yet another generation of Sumatran tiger cubs in the Australasian region!
 
It is indeed a surprise - I wonder if this means the plans to loan a pair of unrelated Sumatran tigers from a zoo in Indonesia have fallen through. Since Kartika and Clarance are related (Kartika’s maternal grandfather and Clarance’s father are littermates) and there were several better matches in the region, I wondered if the plan was to breed them with either the unrelated pair from Indonesia, or the offspring of that pair.

Either way, these cubs are the fifth generation of cubs from the Nico/Meta line born at Taronga:

Nico/Meta (F0) > Shiva (G1) > Juara (G2) > Jumilah (G3) > Kartika (G4) > New Cubs (G5).

The birth was quite a suprise and really incredible given that Kartika and Clarence were only introduced in October last year! I can still remember when Kartika was born. :p

Yeah, things happened much faster for them; than for Satu and Jumilah, who took almost two years to successfully breed.

I'll be interested to see if it 1.2 cubs, as they cubs are only three weeks old (and sexing isn't considered 100% reliable until at least six weeks of age). Dreamworld initially reported they had a litter of 1.2 Sumatran tiger cubs in 2008, only to discover at the 6 week check that Jaya was actually a female, and the litter was 0.3.

I hope they invite the public to help name the cubs!

Taronga are running a naming competition for the cubs, which is exciting. They also announced the cubs will make their public debut later this month.

Breeding wise, Auckland or Melbourne, who have middle aged individuals at the moment and could benifit with young breeding individuals soon. Taronga has a very spacious area for their tigers, consisting of 4 enclosures so should be able to keep the cubs without having enough space. There are many more options overseas too...

Perth have also been in a none breeding situation for the last 10 years. Currently holding 2.0 (10 year old male and an unrelated 15 year old male at present)
 
Red Panda Triplets

Red panda triplets were born in December 2018 to Pabu (from Auckland Zoo) and Amala (from the Bronx Zoo).

They are the second litter for the pair, who produced Maiya in November 2016, and are the first set of triplets born at Taronga Zoo.

It notes that triplets are rare for this species (and indeed one or two are the norm); but I’m surprised Taronga Zoo have never had triplets before. According to a news article from 2010, they’ve been breeding them since 1977 and had then just celebrated the birth of their 45th cub; meaning they’re up to at least 49 cubs by now.

Both Auckland and Hamilton Zoo have successfully raised triplets. 17 Red panda cubs have been born at Auckland Zoo, including triplets in 2002; Nine Red panda cubs have been born at Hamilton Zoo, including triplets in 2012.

The Red panda cubs are 2.1.

The males are named Rohan (ascending) and Ishwar (powerful); the female is named Mishry (sweet).
