Does anybody have any idea of what Ted Turner is up to?

He is the largest private landholder in the USA.

Some suggestions

Turner is trying to corner the land over the Ogallala Aquifer, the world's largest underground water system, to gain power in the water-starved West."Quote"

Restoing buffalo, cutthroat trout, wolves, black-footed ferrets and other flora and fauna that filled the Plains before the West was won.

He is scheming, perhaps with the United Nations, to create a vast wildlife refuge and turn it over to the U.S. government "Quote"

Turner's Vermejo Park Ranch in New Mexico, for example, offers weeklong elk hunting excursions at $12,000 per person. He has also entered the restaurant business with gusto, opening more than 50 Ted's Montana Grill restaurants across the country that feature bison meat."Quote"

Or is it all of the above????

I find the first suggestion ludicrous (the aquifer in question is well to the southeast of Ted's land), the second is definitely true (although there is no UN involvement), and the third is partially true (the hunting part--never heard of a new restaurant chain).

He has one of the largest conservation programs in the US only rivaled by the US government itself. The work this man's foundation has done to restore land and manage animals on a population level (and not an individual level) has made great strides in conservation biology in the US.

Whatever you may think of the man, Ted Turner is one of those rare individuals who hold a grand vision for the environment that surrounds us. We should be thankful people like Ted and Donald Tompkins invest their hard earned cash into conserving our natural resources for future generations. A case of putting back something in, after taking something out!

On a case in point: Ted is probably one of the biggest supporters of restoration ecology with quite a number of species part of recovery and reintroduction efforts on his properties.

I simply love the man!

Is Tomkins the one trying to restore the Ibera Wetlands in Argentina? I agree, we need individuals like these - they are the only people who ever make things happen!
