Hello all,

I am off to Bangkok end of July, and l will visit Safari World.

Wondering if zoo chatters had suggestions of other Zoo's, Aquarium or Nature reserves within an hour by plane of Bangkok.

Thank-you in advance:D

Okay will reply to my own thread,

A little like talking to myself on the street....

Actually hoping someone with some ideas may have missed the thread.

Although I have not been to Thailand, Khao Kheow Open Zoo seems to be the premiere zoo in the country. I think it is about a one and a half hour drive southeast of Bangkok.

Thx heaps Arizona Docent,

I had no idea this place existed. Will do my best to add it to my tour of Thailand.

Zoos in Thailand

If you take a look at Zoos in Thailand It will give you something to go on.
Just skimming through my list I would say that if the traffic is with you (it can be appalling in Bangkok) that around 20 of these collections would be within four hours drive of central Bangkok.

I do think that you should stop over in Bangkok just to have a look at the National Zoo. It is deserving of our attention.

Khao Kheow, obviously. And there is zoos in Songkhla and Khorat. The Zoo Safari near Bangkok is a disaster ....

Thank-you Peter,

This is exactly what l was hoping for a detailed list of Thailand's zoo's. l was sure someone here at zoochat would have it.

Safariworld outside of Bangkok l was looking forward to going, would you recommend a visit?

Yes, I would visit Safariworld if just to see Eggworld....Fantastic!
The giraffes are worth seeing and so is much else if just to pick fault. This place is purely commercial and does zilch for conservation, education or research.

Thank-you Kifaru Bwana,

I am looking forward to seeing 50 giraffe together at the safari park near bangkok, is this the place you are calling a disaster?

Not only do I find the practise of "orangutan boxing" abhorrant but where they source the animals from (they claimed to have bred them all previously which was clearly untrue), the conditions they are kept in and the way they are trained are all matters for immense concern. I would definitely not support their activities by visiting.

I appreciate and fully understand your point of view but as a zoo professional, consultant and inspector it is essential that I visit zoos both good and bad. As a writer and independent critic I can make my opinions known.

I accept that and was very interested to read what you wrote.
