The breeeding of unusual marsupials.

From one of my browsing session on zootierliste, i became interested in the breeding status of various marsupials and was wondering if any one knew?

Do species like kowari, feathertailed glider, sugar glider's etc breed? do they breed in private collections?

sugargliders are very easy to breed and are quite commonly kept in b.e. Netherlans and Germany.
Kowaries are very are but kept by private collections and bred there. The problem with them is that when you keep the male and female together you have watch out that they will not kill eachother, plus after mating you have to seperate them again.

from what I have read, it is very easy to get sugar gliders as pets in UK, mainland Europe and USA. They breed readily in captivity.

I understand that for some reason wombats don't though (correct me if I'm wrong)

The main problem with wombats is most people dont give them enough privacy, a mate of mine, who has bred both SHN and Common Wombats, they have 8m long L shaped tunnels with a nesting chamber at the back, his wombats are also able to dig anywhere in the enclosure, with the footings going 2m into the ground. I have never bred wombats, I only ever had young animals at home.

In europe breeding the marsupials is not the problem, but more the availability (b.e. If fat-tailed dunnarts would get available they would probably get as common as sugargliders) and the limited interest in them. B.e. Kowari's are not that hard to breed but as there wasn't too much interest of zoo's a lot of them were fased out. Now they are mainly available in private collections but in very limited amounts.

Another example are striped possums, enough people with the right knowledge and expertise that want to keep them, but unfortunately none of them are available.

sorry enough Brush Tailed Possums here same for Bettongia penicillata, but we can also settle for some quolls or if you prefer sending us birds we are kind of short on paradise parrots here :p

However, Ben and I have a friend who has bred Commons housed in a yard about 8m by 5m with just a box as a nest! They have no digging opportunities anywhere in the yard. Go figure!

DDcorvus - are you associated with a zoo?

No I'm not. I m mainly keeping birds although I have a big interest in marsupials. I've kept several mammal species before, but at the moment my private situation does not allow me to keep them. I hope that this will change coming year and for sure I ll get some brush-tailed possums and bettongs then as both species are quite easy to get. Striped possums are on my wish list for the last years but every time when it seemed they would get available something went wrong.

I saw stripped possums offered by at least 2 local animal dealers within last few months. So they are available (FB from Indonesia) but I would be cautious with freshly imported animals, not to mention the moral aspect.
