"One eyebrow-raising case surfaced last year when police in Vietnam seized 42 pangolins and handed them over to forest rangers for safekeeping. The rangers sold the critically endangered creatures to local restaurants for $11,000."
The article talks optimistically about 'designated rescue centers' as if designation changed anything. Idealistic name does not cover the facts. Many animals die or suffer alone in cages resembling a shelter for homeless dogs and cats.
There should be a network of specialized centers for every group of animals - not realistically located in one country or even on one continent. Confiscated animals should be moved immediately where they receive best care and can either return to the wild or become part of captive breeding plan; not necessary in the country of confiscation.
