The Killing of Feral Camels

can anyone please tell me more about the new law of feral camels being killed? Someone at school told me that Kevin Rudd has allowed anyone to kill any feral camel on site is this true?

Camels have no form of protection as they were introduced as a draft animal. Wild camels are just another pest damaging the environment. They shoud not have any form of protection. Land owners throughout central Australia mostly shoot camels on site, but the area is so large their poulation has continued to increase. Aboriginal lands and national parks are also resivoirs for camels as very little control is done there.

Some aboriginal groups I have heard of in central Australia dont want to see camels and donkeys controled as missionaries convinced them that these animals are somehow sacred as they are in the bible. This upsets me because as well as destroying the aboriginal culture, the missionaries are now destroying the environment and causing extinctions of our native species, through their actions of many years ago.

Rudds plan will temparily reduce camel numbers but unless something changes they will just breed up again.

I think funds shold be focussed on capturing these guys. There are millions of dollars to be made. Our aussie camels are so healthy that Arab Sheiks spend millions on them.

I do agree with Glyn. They don't need protection and I was offended for kevin rudd by the statement of a US Newsreader calling him a murderer. let's pack up the camels and ship them over there.

righto, thanks. Australia has unfortunately mass numbers of pests. e.g. Kangaroo ( though Naturally found in the country), cane toad, camels.

And foxes, I know in the region I live in they have ordered a fox hunt it was in the local newspaper.

Dump Australia's overpopulation on an already seriously overgrazed Arabian Peninsula/North African environment. So much for being environmentally conscious globally, ay .... as long as it is out of our backyard?!!! :(

Since, I am on a roll here ... (LOL) ;)!!!

Kangaroos are not a pest species, it is the agricultural community that created a mess of grassland habitats that literally helped the kangaroo and wallaby populations explode further. So, what do we suggest ... killing kangaroos or killing ...?

Other than that: yep, Oz has a lot to contend with in invasive alien species. Just out of sheer curiousity: any idea when your extirmination or reduction campaigns for animals like cane toads, foxes et al will start showing up more concrete results?

That isn't what I meant. There is potential to farm camels for meat products rather than shooting them and leaving them. I think the government should look in to making the reduction of the population profitable.

I don't see kangaroos as a pest, but a resource which when utilized properly provide an income as well as keeping numbers at optimum levels, not over or under populated.

I also attend and organize fox drives. I have a couple of short videos on U-Tube of fox drives and the number of Kangaroos around.

The only market for the numbers of camels we have are for either meat or live export for meat. The problem is the huge distances and lack of roads. I have herd of station owners rounding up mobs of camels, which is not easy and holding them in yards for buyers. When the buyers come around they only wanted the young ones and the rest had to be shot as there was no market for them. Most of the time it is impossible to round them up and shooting is the only option. There are people doing this in the areas closer to settlements for pet food. There is a portable abattoir being built I have herd of, but that wont make much impact. We need hundreds of portable abattoirs and a market for the meat which is willing to pay a high enough price to make it viable.

I agree completely and unless we do something now we will end up with the same seriously overgrazed environment.

Well, as I always say when I here about animals being killed (including for meat) I always say the same thing.

"There's Always an Alternative"

How many small zoos do you reckon there are that do not have camels?

Could always import some the UK zoos - no/not many dromedaries here, although it's probably too cold for 'em

Whilst I would agree, I can't help but feel your comment may get ridiculed by certain members lol.

An alternative to millions o amels destroying our native environment??? Where would you possibly find a home for millions of camels. They are feral, they are destructive and although. If zoos in Australia wanted camels they would have them. If zoos overseas want our camels there is really nothing stopping them. There are companies in Australia that are dedicated to exporting camels. I would like to see them farmed commercially but realistically there is just not the market for them or their meat.

I would be interested in knowing if you have any other alternatives.

Castration, importing them to other places, I imagine there'd be some type of contraception that could be used. IMO it's quite barbaric for people just to say "kill them". China's seriously over populated by people but they haven't resorted to a cull ;)

I wonder in camel racing is there like geldings?? ;)

Contraception is a good alterrnative, in america they are trying to come up with one for wild boars.
