The Most Conservation Minded Zoos

Blackduiker

I know the LA Zoo does a lot of work with California Condor conservation and recently with Peninsular Pronghorn conservation. The LA Zoo also established the Mountain Tapir Conservation Fund back in 2000. The zoo also helped with the Arabian Oryx and Golden Lion Tamarin.

That list would also have to include the Yellow-footed Rock Wallaby, Bongo, Marbled Cat, Crested Capuchin, Visayan Warty Pig, Maned Wolf, and Bali Mynah.

How much of a lot of the above mentioned zoos conservation spend comes direct from their own income?

WCS would receive huge amounts of well deserved funding even if the zoos closed down tomorrow. It does not need to operate the 4 zoos to be a major conservation organisation. How much of the Bronx Zoos stand alone income would go direct into conservation in the field.

I am sure there are many smaller zoos who as a proportion put just as much if not more self raised income into conservation, but are not in a position to either gain outside funding or indeed should be. Surely because of the great work WCS does it must always be high on the list for additional funding. Available conservation spend is limited and extremely competitive.

Should add that I am pro the zoos and the in the field work of the WCS.
