The National elephant center

African Forest elephants and African Savanna elephants are morphologically and molecularly distinct from one another. The Paris zoo was supposed to include them in their revamp of their zoo.... But I guess that fell through. I don't feel it will be long until they are recognized as a separate species. Unfortunately as you said Sumatran, Sri Lankan, mainland, and Pygmy elephants aren't bred with in their own subspecies. Realistically it's just not possible to create sustainable captive populations for each subspecies with the space allotted.
This thread digressed :D

Of the elephants that I've heard are going to the NEC, none are Asian.... Does the facility plan to hold both species?

The website shows pictures of, what I precieve, as only Asian Elephants right now but, yes, they plan on African.

Hopefully you're right and African Forest Elephants will one day be recognized as the unique species they are.

Updates since this thread was last visited:
The elephants (2,2--> from Disney) were announced to have arrived May 17, 2013.
Deaths:

[Early] 2014, Tufani, a ten year old male (Maclean x Moyo) died of a salmonella infection

July 2014, Moyo, a 33 year old female died while giving birth to her male calf. Given her history of two successful births, this is surprising.

Transfers
As of April 21, 2015 a 36 year old female African elephant named Juno has been at the NEC from Nashville.

Hadari (31), Rosi (35), Sukari (31), will also be traveling from Nashville to the NEC, as Nashville renovates its elephant exhibit.

The center is expecting two new Asian elephants from an unidentified entertainment company. The Press Journal in Vero Beach reported in November that the arrival has been delayed until sometime this year while the group raises $150,000 for barn improvements.

I also thought this blurb from a recent news article would be of interest. I presume this means they have already neared completion of the Asian quarters (I don't believe they would use the same housing).
