The NE of England needs a good Zoo?

I now live in Newcastle and unless I go up to Edinburgh (which I do quite often), I feel so far from a good, extensive zoological Collection. Granted, I havn't been to the Yorkshire W Park and I don't like Flamingo Land - the only bonus being Washington WWT reserve (very under-rated and rarely mentioned). Years ago there was a menagerie in the Newcastle Town Hall and the nearby town of Stanley had a 'Lion Park'? Geordies are nice people but they have little chance to access Zoo parks, in fact, unless kids here have teachers willing to drive all the way to Chester or catch the train to Scotland I fear they will miss out on the experience - are there any Zoo barren areas of the UK AND is anyone looking to build one? I'm your man if so!

I have often thought that if I was to set up a zoo, the North East would be a good place, although the weather can get pretty extreme for the more delicate of species.

The people there certainly do deserve a decent Zoo/Animal park.

i love the north east and it definatly needs a decent zoo.
believe it or not from the late 50's to the late 70's there used too be 2-3 zoological collections in the north east. Lampton Lion Park(safari park), A Dolphinarium (i believe it was near lampton lion park) And A Zoo (not sure if it is the Town Hall zoo or not) which apparently was quite bad. apparently The Zoo was very bad and The Safari Park and Dolphinarium pushed it out of Buisness. I Know the Dolphinarium Closed in the Mid-Late 70's and As Far as i'm Aware Lampton Lion Park also Closed Then. Im not sure when the zoo closed. My dad has many memories of the Lion Park.

I hope this helps in any way (even though it is slightely off topic)
Your's,

I've often thought the same. Any chance of Tweddle Farm in Hartlepool getting seriously into exotics has now been removed as they've decided not to pursue a zoo licence.

tweddle animal farm

- h eee I first visited TWEDDLE ANIMAL FARM two years ago and I was not impressed at what I saw. Raccoons with plastic containers for feed bowls, capuchin living in a barn on its own,two bactrian camels which at the time had recently joined the collection had a flimsy wooden structure for a stable. The whole place appeared to be very. makeshift and homemade. It was therefore no surprise to me this year when I became aware of the C.A.P.S. investigation and reports into Tweddle Animal Farm and its practices. If a children's zoo wishes to expand into exotic species, all well and good, but surely the correct procedure would be to obtain the appropriate zoo license from the local authority before stocking the place with zoo species rather than obtaining the animals first then discussing a license later.
I visited TWEDDLE ANIMAL FARM again this year to see if things had improved, apart from the monkey being re-homed at a sanctuary and more notices being displayed telling visitors to wash their hands after touching the animals, I did not think there had been any improvements at all. It now transpires that the4 owners have withdrew their application for a zoo license due to finances involved in bringing this place up to zoo standard and are to dispose of the zoo stock and concentrate on domestic species. I WISH THEM WELL WITH THIS REVISED ARRANGEMENT and hope they in the future educate their visitors in domestic rare breeds as well as well as giving children the pleasure of stroking rabbits and bottle feeding lambs. The north east of England has never in my lifetime been well served with zoological collections Stanley,SEABURN A SMELLY SLUM and indeed the short lived LAMBTON LION PARK if it had survived had the potential of being a first class attraction in the grounds of the LAMBTON ESTATE. I doubt if we will ever see a Colchester or a Paignton in the north east, however a small well run establishment would be welcome perhaps in the Barnard Castle area of County Durham.

I like both Mablethorpe Seal Sanctuary and Sewerby Park Zoo, although the latter has never really developed its collection further than monkeys, penguins, aviaries and deer but the potential for a fantastic small zoo at that site is great.

I think Flamingoland is a good collection, but agree that a zoological collection without a theme park attached would be a good thing for this area.
