Philadelphia Zoo The Next Big Thing - Philadelphia Zoo Continues To Reinvent Itself

The zoo has opened up applications for designers to help it re-invent a major section of the zoo. They have invited pretty much all of the leading zoo design firms from North America and Europe to submit qualifications.
Philadelphia Zoo
This will be the big story from this zoo for the next decade

Sadly, it seems like they aren't bringing back Elephants... it seems like the old Children's Zoo area would be perfect for a Miombo Woodlands habitat for elephants, given the large amount of tree cover. And this seems highly idealistic, given the amount of demolition and reconstruction of existing habitats. Every one they make, such as Outback Outpost and the new Eagle Aviary only strays further from this plan.

It certainly is big news if Philadelphia Zoo plans to completely overhaul more than 25% of the zoo's grounds (9 acres) and the fact that developers almost have a blank slate is exciting. When I visited in 2010 I found the zoo to have a great and fairly comprehensive collection of animals but other than Big Cat Country not really many excellent exhibits. Hopefully that will change in the future. :)

Well, for what it is worth, placing an elephant exhibit among old existing trees results more often than not in dead trees.

I mean in the sense they are protected using either artificial mudbanks, hotwire, kind of like Omaha's habitat.

They've been redoing bit by bit. Even the big cat area seems a little old compared to other sections, at this point, especially the children's zoo. I'm really hoping they do something nice for the cheetahs, who are kind of forgotten in the back at this point.
