The petting zoo of DOOM

There is risk with everything we do. Even if all the cases mentioned were all true it is still a very small percentage of the millions contacted animals at zoos , and those diseases could mostly be caught from your own pet dog, but PETA don't want you to have pets either.

This is essentially the same as saying don't touch anything, EVER! Because you don't know where its been. You can't really live your life being this cautious about everything, especially if you are enthusiastic about animals. Even household pets have some pretty gross habits that we'd rather not think about!

The squirrel in the park can give your child rabies, pet dogs and cats can carry all sorts of zoo notic diseases (and we let them lick our faces). Most zookeeper and vet training programs spend some time discussing zoonoses and hygiene, so most vets and zeerkeepers are well aware of these facts even if the general public aren't. The only reason a petting zoo is likely to be any worse than petting animals on a farm, is that farm animals aren't exposed to hundreds of (potentially already disease-ridden) humans everyday. But the greatest source of disease to children is other people - especially other children - and playing outside.

PETA are just painting another great masterpiece, a bright abstract that catches the untrained eye but that has no perspective.

:p
