The sad death of Quinto

I can confirm that Quinto, the black rhinoceros died on the 31st January 2011 at Port Lympne Zoo.

I have no idea how many calves he has around Chester and Port Lympne.
If anybody has any pictures of him or his calves I would be grateful if you would email them to me. You see, my son when he was five years old used to see Quinto every monday, he used to feed him with the keeper, twigs and the occasional chocolate button. It was bizarre because Oliver my son used to call his name and he used to come and see him.

Oliver is now 11 years old but he still remembers him fondly.

they let you feed a black rhino? Interesting. I've fed/pet a White but I didn't think a Zoo anywhere would take on the temperament problems of Black Rhinos because of the liability.
 
That would depend on the temperate of individual black rhino. Although black rhinos are generally considered to be short tempered grouchy even aggressive animals, this does not mean that all individuals will be and the result of captivity will affect an animals behaviour massively in many cases. Therefore it is likely this Quinto was a pretty ‘chilled out’ individual, therefore the keepers where happy enough to let someone feed him in this way and on the flip side, Quinto himself was confident enough to feed from someone in this way.
 
As a child I once stroked a white rhino in a holding pen it Knowsley SP and a good few years later a hippo at i think Antwerp zoo a lady was feeding it cabbages I recall and once stroked the very soft muzzle of a Malayan tapir at Artis zoo but thats about it as far as I recall.

It's nice that your son has such good memories of a zoo animal.

Its wonderful news. I hope that when my son grows up we still have rhinos.
 
There is a thread on 'Quinto' in the UK Forum also. 'Asani' is apparently so far his only other descendant apart from his two daughters at Chester(one doesn't breed) and is now at Port Lympne.
