Mary and I volunteered and lived for three winters at the Lamar Buffalo Ranch in the heart of Yellowstone's wolf country. We drove 14-passenger buses, filled with excited seminar participants, along the Lamar Valley’s snow-covered roads in search of wildlife. Wolves top the list of animals visitors want to see in winter; coyotes definitely take second billing.

But truth be told—I like coyotes as much as I like wolves. And two special days at the ranch one winter gave me the chance to observe coyotes in the wild and realize why I like them so.

Agreed. And I think the big reason people hate them so much is that people try controlling predators, and the coyote is the one largeish predator that has resisted human control.

That makes perfect sense. Coyotes (Canis latrans) are definitely underappreciated and remarkable animals. I am grateful that I hear them howling outside my apartment complex every single night. I enjoy their vocalizations.
