Better: Asides from basic things like graphics and gameplay, Planet Zoo shows the most improvements in available animals. Exhibit species helps the game have much more variety than ZT2, which was very mammal-heavy. I also love how much more creative freedom I get in Planet Zoo, especially with construction. I'm sure the developers looked at a lot of the later ZT2 mods for inspiration in that.

Worse: The game can get very overwhelming at times. When playing a zoo game, I care more about building cool exhibits than worrying about electrical grids or having five different types of staff buildings (and the customers complaining about staff buildings sucks too.) I also dislike the animal delivery system, I miss being able to instantly place down 40 grizzly bears at once whenever I feel like it. My biggest complaint about Planet Zoo is that they didn't fix my biggest complaint about Zoo Tycoon, the lack of flying birds. I would have liked to at least have toucans, parrots, and birds of prey available for this game.

I greatly agree with your points here. Aside from the now AGGRAVATING lack of flying birds (we have bats, butterflies---- and over two years without a single budgie. Are you sh*tting me?), I think the game's bigest flaw is that it's not casual-friendly. I'm sick of having to spend SOOOO much damn time making a staff area and plonking down mandatory information screens and loudspeakers, and preparing everything, and of course the awful unnecessary transport system and quarantine. It's needlessly complicated, and it concerns me that Prehistoric Kingdom is seemingly also taking that route. Well... at least they have flying animals from the start.
