Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden Things To Visit

I get to go to the Cincinnati Zoo this week for the first time ever.

Can anyone point out highlights that will be present this time of year? Things that are a must see? Tips, tidbits & guides to the zoo?

Thanks so much!

It's a small zoo. See it all.
It is more hilly than the Bronx Zoo and more "packed" (more exhibits per acre) but really only takes a few hours, especially in December!

If you have any extra time, there is also Cincinnati's Natural History Museum and also the Newport Aquarium across the Ohio river in Kentucky.

As for the zoo, I have visited in January and had the place to myself. Definitely take the chance to see it all.

I was looking at the map today and minus the cheetahs and the rhinos and the tigers and the elephants and giraffes and gorillas and bonobos--is everything else on display this time of year ?

The gorillas might well be outside if the day is warm enough. The site is very protected and they do put them out when it seems cold to us.
The bonobos have an indoor area where they can be seen.
There's a decent chance you can see everything unless Cincinnati is having a cold snap.

Hrm, now I'm exciting that Saturday looks to be in the low 40's. Thank you.

Let us know how it was. I'm attending a conference there in February. Hope I get to see the animals as it might be too cold...

Well, it's been awhile but I have to say that I loved the Cincinnati Zoo infinitely.

I didn't even make it to the 'left' side of the zoo so I can't even review the rhino, elephant, or giraffe exhibits (if they were even out). The gorillas weren't out at all but everything else was top notch.

The Little Penguins walkabout was phenomenal and I LOVED being able to see baby animals in the nursery. I don't know about the rest of you, but I've been following Tommy T's cheetah blog ever since meeting him!

The Wings of the World was easily the best bird exhibit I've ever seen. Walk in aviaries, open faced exhibits and basic displays were all phenomenal. If it wasn't for the sliding doors, there are times I would have been unable to say I was in a zoo. My only complaint would be that the penguin exhibit (featuring three of the species--rockhopper, emperor and Magellanic all in one display) was a little on the small side.

Jungle Trails--wow, talk about an exhibit that deserves it's AZA exhibit award! I'd imagine the luxurious outdoor areas are phenomenal during the summer but even without them, this exhibit is amazing. The best part--the smaller exhibits before the indoor bonobo viewing area--are some of the most luscious displays I've ever seen.

The Lords of the Arctic display was amazing. The area for the 'other' bears were on the small side but the actual polar land for the polar bears was top-notch, easily one of the best I've seen.

I don't know how I feel about the white lions. While I was there they were just sitting on a platform and I couldn't really see all too many other options for them.

The Manatee building was spectacular. It was great to be that close to them. The ones exhibited knew how to entertain too--they refused to stay still the whole time.

I don't like nocturnal houses. Being afraid of the dark and not liking bats, they tend to be one of my least favorite places in zoos but the nocturnal house was amazing. What struck me most was that there was so much light inside. I've been to other night houses with so little light that you cannot read the displays--let alone see anything. This one was phenomenal and the animals had great areas.

Not being a fan of insects either, I really thought seeing the insect house would be something I would do just to say I saw it but WOW. So many species, so little time! Great displays and the hand-on ants exhibit was spectacular.

The tiger canyon was pretty mediocre. One cat per paddock, lots of space but nothing too interesting.

The cat house (which I'm assuming is 'popping' in summer) was great too. The chance to see so many cats in one place was amazing. While I was there, the pallas cats were undergoing their light treatment but it was great to see them even from a distance.

The red panda exhibit had SO much space for the animals. I was amazed--I'm used to tiny little exhibits for these animals (between the Bronx Zoo and Central Park) and they sure seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Finally the reptile house. While small, there's a great feel to the building. The individual animal displays are wonderful and the site makes use of it's small space.

I cannot WAIT to go back to this zoo, especially during the summer. As someone looking to immediately relocate to the Cincinnati area (once I find a job there), I am thrilled that there's such a great zoo there!

Anyone else have any thoughts on this zoo?

Well I haven't been to Cincinnati but would love to go. I cannot believe that a member of this site would visit the zoo and not see the Sumatran rhinos. Were you very short of time? If I had only half an hour I would pay the entrance fee to see the Sumatran rhinos alone.

Well I know that I'll be going back to this zoo frequently so I wasn't too concerned about missing the chance :p.

I was actually on a limited time schedule and I'm pretty sure they weren't even on display due to the high-level of construction over by their exhibit that day. When we walked over towards the reptile house all you could hear was drilling. Next time...they are priority #1, however :).

I too am amazed that you didn't see the sumatrans, but if you are going to be heading back soon then that's no problem. I posted a huge review of the Cincinnati Zoo on the thread "Snowleopard's Epic Road Trip", and loved the collection but was disappointed in the quality of a number of exhibits. However, "Insect World" is regarded as perhaps the best insect house in North America, and "Jungle Trails" is outstanding. I have a lot more thoughts on the zoo on that road trip thread...

During the winter, the Sumatran rhinos are only out for a short time (30 mins each?) of the day and have access to a heated den. So even, though they may be on exhibit...they may be in the warmth.

I was amazed by a lot of the building exhibits at the zoo but for the most part, the outdoor exhibits made me a bit sad. The bears--minus the polar exhibit--were terrible (Hagenbeck or not) and I thought much like did did that the reptile house was....small, to say the least. I know many people have taken issue with the cat house but (being winter, none of the cats were outside) the indoor exhibits for most of them seem more than spacious (albeit a lackluster). I think those were my main complaints about the zoo as a whole but I feel I'll have a different idea entirely when I see it in the summer session when Jungletrails (which I think is one of the top 3 US exhibits, easily) has animals outside, and the rhinos, elephants, girafees, cheetahs, lemurs and gorillas are out and about full-time.

I think with Cincinnati especially is that it's a phenomenal zoo on it's own--but as soon as it's compared to other zoos...a number of the exhibits fall short.
