Three rhino poachers were shot dead in a confrontation with game rangers at the Kruger National Park on Wednesday evening, the Hawks said.

Captain Paul Ramaloko said that around 6pm the rangers heard a gunshot, which alerted them to the poachers' presence.

They found three Mozambican men, in their 20s, and a shootout ensued.

None of the rangers was wounded, Ramaloko said.

A hunting rifle and ammunition were found at the scene.

He said the rangers could not find any dead or wounded rhino in the area, but were keeping watch.

They will not be missed by the planet. Pity they couldn't have been taken alive and given information about the men to whom they would have sold horns, but it's obviously kill or be killed.

No sympathy whatsoever for the poachers, one good thing, they didn't shoot any rhinos before being shot themselves, good riddance.

That's all a bit harsh. I know these were by no means good men and they're certainly better off dead in our views but I can't help hoping at there isn't a little girl or boy wondering if their daddy is ever going to come home...

Good news all the same:D Thankfully no animals were harmed!

The words may be harsh, just like the number of rhinos left in the wild which makes very grim reading, desperate times require desperate measures, serves them right, they knew the risks involved before embarking on this slaughter, It wont certainly stop me from sleeping in my bed tonight worrying about a few poachers being shot dead, in fact its a pity they couldn't shoot a few more of this scum.

Oh yes of course. I was just playing the devil's advocate. I'm sure there have been hundreds of rhinos orphaned. These guys knew the danger and kudos to the park ranger for what they've done.

I'm absolutely against the Death Penalty, but for poachers of endangered species...shoot 'em on sight.

Although this is good news, the bigger problem is the market place with our 'friends' in the far east, now if some of them could be shot too then there would be less of a market.

I saw a WCS video saying they're teaching US troops to be aware and monitor some of these markets in the Middle East. Of course it's more education and I don't think the troops can arrest these individuals or anything.

Great news all around.

I will not advocate shooting some of our friends in the Far East though, as chizlit suggests. I still feel slightly optimistic that enforcing existing laws would put a huge dent in the trade.

Some bad news this time

A helicopter crash in South Africa's Kruger National Park has killed five members of the military who were patrolling in an anti-rhino poaching operation.

The helicopter's patrol was routine and an investigation into the cause of the crash is now under way.

A military statement identified the aircraft as an Agusta A109 light utility helicopter.

Rhino poaching is rampant in South Africa, and the military is trying to stop the killing of the animals for their horns, which are worth more than their weight in gold.

Three suspected poachers were killed in a shoot-out with rangers on Wednesday in the vast Kruger, where the killing of rhinos is particularly widespread.
