Masterplan and current Projects
Well, let me comment some of these highlights as well as some other projects:
The
polar bear enclosure or rather the visitors area is currently being renovated. They mainly take away some sections of the wall so as to put in a large panorama window (probably similar to the large windows that have been incorporated into the other bear enclosures). Thus, it will be possible to watch them swim. Unfortunately it won't reach underneath the water level, so the diving cannot be watched. Also they plan a tunnel for disabled people and prams. Costs run about 140.000 Euro and it should be finished by the end of the year - it actually was a project for last year, but the plans got changed.
This year's small funding project is the
eagle aviary near the main entrance of the park. It will become much larger and more attractive for the visitors. It will cost around 110.000 Euro and also should be completed before the end of the year.
At the same time the
tropic hall in the
Brehm-house is being renovated. It receives a board-walk and is to become a new old attraction for the park. The whole building receives an energetic renovation as well and if information is correct the cat cages will be enlarged and combined in the next couple of years. Costs so far amount up to 10 million Euro without the cages and the hall is to reopen at the end of the year. If the hole house receives a modern outlook and appropriate housing conditions for all animals it will be a major milestone for the Tierpark.
I don't believe they can raise sufficient funding for the
Galapagos experience. But I don't really care that much about this particular project as it would not include any animals anyways (it's mainly about technical gimmicks which aren't a bad thing of course). The same goes for the
electric taxis. The
manatees already exist and can be watched from different perspectives. I don't know the plans as they have not been communicated yet. The
farm experience has been planned so as to entertain families with their kids. I don't know any details about this project, though. I also don't know which
bird of prey aviaries are concerned as there are many and most of them have just been renovated and massively extended.
The project titled
boat ride to the Rocky mountains actually has been planned for quite a long time now. It is to complement the mountain areas for Asian and European animals and is to exhibit mountain lions, otter, beavers, prairie dogs among others as well as the usual deer, sheep etc. - we're talking of the Tierpark

The only new about the whole thing is the boat ride. It seems part of a new strategy which encludes fun elements along the mere exhibition of animals. This sudden change of approach kind of surprises me (not necessarily in a negative way) and it makes the project much more expensive - first estimates suggest around 10 million Euro. If the project can be funded it would finally complete the whole mountain zoo and hopefully include a second entrance to this area.
The
south east Asian house is to feature orang utans as well as sun bears and perhaps binturongs. Again the presentation of the animals is to be a focus of the whole design. The zoo managers promise a special/ innovative perspective on these tree-living animals. It's one of my favourite projects as it would mean the final return of great apes to the Tierpark and be it but one species. Unfortunately the project is also estimated at about 10 million Euro.
So I believe the whole plan shows how the Tierpark can become more attractive and gain more visitors. At the same time it will be a major challenge to raise such large amounts for attractive projects. There also is a large potential for further development: Some of the African enclosures could be combined (e.g. giraffes, ostriches, zebras...) to form a savannah, some of the enclosures could receive more structure, the animals more enrichment... It will be rather thrilling to watch the coming years and decades.
