An animal trainer is critically ill after being mauled by three tigers during a performance.

Christian Walliser tripped over in an enclosure containing five Bengal tigers during a "dinner circus" in the German city of Hamburg, reports the BBC.

The animals pounced on the 28-year-old at the private Hagenbeck Zoo, biting his head and body.

He was treated at the scene by two doctors in the audience before being taken to hospital.

The tigers were driven back into their cages with fire extinguishers but the zoo's director, Stefan Pagels, said they wouldn't be put down.

He said that he hoped Walliser - currently in a critical condition - would soon be back at work.

"We have a saying in the circus business: 'The show must go on.' We are sure Mr Walliser wants us to go on," said Pagels.

"First of all, the tigers did nothing wrong. Secondly, we never punish our animals, we only ever reward them. Punishing them would serve no purpose and there is no reason to put them to sleep."

Stefan Pagel is NOT the zoo director.
The tigers are NOT from the zoo.
The animal trainer is NOT an employer of the zoo.

the building in which the "DINNER CIRCUS" taking place is the old training hall of Hagenbecks Tierpark. This building was delivered from the Hagenbeck family to Stefan Pagel in 1998.
 
The stupid people will never die out, I'm Sorry to say that, but big cats ar not sweet little Pussy cats. Whats worse, the man is a trained zookeeper and has fed milk bottles to full adult tigers...A zookeeper has to know that big cats will stay dangerous animals if trained or not.
 
Isn't he a trainer from a circus, not a keeper? Why would he do a circus act if he was a keeper?
 
I only know he made a training as a zookeeper and later he went to the circus. Not many trained zookeepers are working in a circus, but many zookeepers in zoos came from the circus. I hate circusses, so I never would work in one.
 
I'm glad the Tigers aren't being put down. There too many already being killed by habitat loss, fur trade etc that to kill them because they are following their natural instincts is pure 100% concentrated stupid. Hate circus anyway. However hope the trainer gets better....or whatever...
 
I'm glad they're not being put down too. I love circuses, but I feel it's the trainer's own risk so the tigers shouldn't be punished if he gets hurt.
