TODMORDEN'S SLAUGHTER HOUSE AND ZOO.

Mr. Peter Boddy, owner of the slaughter house which is licensed to slaughter horses in Todmorden, West Yorkshire and was yesterday raided by the Food Standards Agency,as well as having a slaughter house on his farm also keeps a veritable menagerie according to the national press today. At this farm there are wallaby, black swan, elk, ostrich, bison, porcupine, muntjac and a large herd of red deer. Mr. Boddy apparently is also involved with an initiative called Live Animal Capture, which captures and sedates wild animals and places them into captivity for the safety of themselves and others. Mr. Boddy claims to have been involved with this practice for around twenty years and indeed runs a twenty four hour helpline exclusively for this purpose, has anyone ever visited this zoological collection with its additional "attractions"?, although I strongly suspect that it will not be open to the general public!

I'm quite close to Todmorden, but have never heard of it.

(could mine be the most pointless post ever? ):D

I live very near to Peter Boddy and have known the family for most of my life...in fact the youngest brother was in my class at primary school! The horsemeat thing was a storm in a teacup stirred along by the media-and his so called "menagerie" just a few odds and sods in fields around his farm.I cant say too much about the following but he used to cull surplus at a well-known UK zoo..the same one that sent me a snotty letter about my review of their establishment in "The IZES Guide To British Zoos And Aquariums" published a few years ago claiming that "it wasnt scientific"[oh really? exactly which reviews of books, records, restaurants, cars, etc etc in this weekends newspapers will be "scientific"?].They even suggested that my review might have a deleterious effect on their visitor figures!Obviously the pen is still mightier than the sword!

Oh, and incidentally, Todmorden does have a small tropical house in its rather glorious public park..its only pet shop species but not bad really and some folks would consider it a zoo "visit"[but not me].And the park had a Vervet Monkey for many years when i was a kid[then again monkeys were all over the place back in the day].

Thank-you Tim, I think you have confirmed what I was thinking when I read Tarzan's post last month but decided I had better not post a reply - that is presuming the culling was the matter I learned about around fourteen years ago when standing next to you and Sam at the collection in question.

Hello Andrew, I had a strong suspicion to what zoological establishment Tim was referring to yesterday, after reading your post, suspicion confirmed I think, in this case two plus two definitely equals four!

Thank-you for confirming that Tim - I shall not say exactly why I pulled a face!

Tarzan, I think the tree up which you are barking is probably the right one.
