For the first time, a seabird (the Atlantic puffin) has been observed using tools in the wild. In two separate observations, one in Wales in 2014 and one in Iceland in 2018, puffins were seen to pick up sticks and use them to scratch parts of their body. This is the first time any bird has been seen using a tool to clean itself (the only other animals recorded doing so are primates and elephants). It is believed that the tool use is to displace parasites - the second observation coincided with an outbreak of seabird ticks in the breeding colony.
