The Conservation Campus construction is in full swing! In addition to the demolition of the Greenhouse Gift Shop there's plenty of walls up around the entrance, both outside and inside the front gates. The small plaza area to the left of the front gates (the spot that used to have rocks to sit on and the big animal pictures) has been completely demolished and there's cranes on site working on whatever that's gonna turn into. I will say that although it felt odd having the Greenhouse be completely missing, the entrance plaza feels a lot more spacious than it used to be thanks to its absence.

When is construction on the Conservation Campus expected to be completed. Also, side question, was the armadillo that Dolf posted on Instagram in an exhibit?

@Van Beal The Sumatran tigers have temporarily been moved to the Amur tiger complex while construction is ongoing on their current exhibit. They're still getting acclimated to their new space so they aren't on display yet. You can see them on Zoolife if you have that tho

The Conservation Campus will be completed in two phases, I don't know if there's a hard date for Phase 1 yet but I imagine it'll be complete in two to three years

The armadillos will go on display somewhere in the Kids Zoo next summer. Until then keepers will be taking them on outreach tours of the zoo so if you're lucky you might be able to catch them on a visit
 
@Van Beal I do believe the plan is for Phase 1 of the Conservation Campus originally was planned for a 2026 opening. I dont know if that has changed yet because they are on track with the start. I would say @hyena142 is probably right in assuming it will be 2-3 years. Historically most projects take a year longer than expected but other than the orang exhibit which was hugely affected by covid Dolf and his team have been banging out projects largely on schedule.

Alrighty. Such an undertaking I was assuming they’d likely divide it into different phases rather than do it all at once.

*sigh* gonna have to drag my parents down to the kids zoo which they were so adamantly opposed to last time for reasons I do not understand. They still have the Abyssinian Ground Hornbill down there as well from what I saw when I visited in November, which is exciting.
 
@Van Beal, the campus will be done in two phases spread several years apart. Phase 1 is going to be all the educational facilities, gift shop, rental spaces, bathrooms, a theatre/auditorium and the river otter exhibit. Phase 2 will be the Peacock Cafe and Zoomo side of the entrance. There will be a new zoomo station, restaurant and hotel. But as I said thats years down the line after phase one opens. They will do a few animal projects first then head back to the entrance.
 
Big question are there any amphibians behind the scenes at the zoo? Also what happend to the red legged serima.
The project seem very ambitious and the zoo will amazing. I read the master plan and I have to say my favorite project is either wilderness north or conservation campus.
 
@antilio capra There's a Chinese giant salamander named Hannibal in the Events Tent near the Amur tiger complex, you can't see him unless they're doing something in there

I'm pretty sure the red legged seriema is still in the Kids Zoo
 
I was in the events tent on Saturday and the giant salamander tank was empty. I have no information other than that observation.

I saw him there last month when I was at the Holiday Market, so hopefully he has just been moved elsewhere at the moment.
 
You still can’t walk in to the Amur tiger indoor viewing area but they removed the canvas that was covering it so they must be adapting well. Hari will stare at you through the glass when he’s in there. He was eating outside today in the morning while Kemala had the whole indoors to herself. Mazy did her thing outside and was as cute as always. In the afternoon Kemala was having so much fun coming up to the glass and was outside the whole time. Safe to say the tigers are all doing well in their new area!
