Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo History and Past #2

It is everywhere now, parks, forests, roadsides - and our backyards. I have experience trying to dig it out but it has a very tough underground runner. That small TZ area would take hours of hard labour just to reduce it, so they keep cutting it back.

When did they tidy it up for the kookaburras? I was last there in June and it seemed overgrown then... I would have liked to see them out there. Maybe I will get to in the spring when I make my yearly visit.

Its a pity that the space cant be used for birds as easily. Stupid avian flu, west nile virus, raccoon poop and vines. It could be converted to another species though that isnt as vulnerable. If it were expanded some they could put the tree kangroos out there in the summer or build housing on the back side and welcome a new species.

While doing research for the family trees thread I accidentally found this gem. I would LOVE to see more retro footage of the zoo. The only animals in the video still alive are hornbill Jonah, gibbons Holly and Lenny. The orang I think is Abigail not Puppe but I may be wrong.

Well I didnt think that through. I ploughed through the youtube channel that this came from and there are more gems. There's the movie that @Sarus Crane found on that same channel but even more.

A McDonald's add touting how cool they are at the zoo from 1974!

A segment on the "new" Marco Polo trail from 1991. You can quit watching at 3:30 in theres no more after that.

A 1995 promotion for the barbary apes. You will need to jack your volume up to hear it. They dont say anything interesting. Just brief description of the animals.

An ad for the 1988 Koala exhibit.

That sent me on a quest to find other videos of the zoo in the past on youtube.

This is a families day out in May 1990. You get a look at the old savannah. Get to see just how dark good old giraffe Cecil was. The calf with them is Panga (Ginetta and Cecils inbred son). He walks with Ginetta a little with Cecil chasing them. Little Panga looks dark like dad already. In the background is a rather round looking female. That is Heidi and she is pregnant with Twiga! How cool is that? You also get to see our recently departed Aldabara tortiose Rasputin. Edge of the Night throwback made me happy. The male Amur was our first Brum.

Another family video from 1995. When you see the snow leopards in the den its Katrina with her yearlings Juno, Normandy and Dimitri. I wish the twany frogmouth was in a good spot again so hes easy to see. Oh and boy to I miss mara. They are so weird. This video answered my coloration question about our old jaguars Diablo and Serena. Diablo was normal coloured and Serena was black. I don't know who the spider monkey baby is because my notes on Julie and Wally dont indicate an infant in 1995. I have Mittens in 1997. Guess I will do Spider monkeys for the trees soon. I loved watching Wally use his tail to pick dandelions. The baby mandrill is Sudi (Jabba and Annette's daughter) and shes playing with cousin Carter (Arthur and Tanya's son). Wow look at the old gorilla exhibit! The little ones roughhousing are Jomo and Sekani. Im not sure which female is behind them but I dont think its Samantha. Oh Josephine! The meerkat pups are Ren, Stumpy and Katherine. Im certain you see Stumpy because one of the pups tail looks like its missing a portion. The male patas monkey is Toledo and the mother with infant is Donna with son Poko. The warthogs were our first Gonzo and Roberta. The Sumatran tigers are Regnat and his brother Rakata. They were in their second year at the zoo. The orangs I think its Puppe (her head moves too fast) and that means the baby is likely Kartiko. Sadly he will die in that moat in 3 years time. Little shot of Dinding. Abigail has her grump on. Never see here with 3 year old Sekali. The one caring for her and playing with the hat and wrestling with her is big sis Ramai. This is the year the white lions visited! What were their names? Tandi, Kowla and Kenya. Kowla is the tawny. The hyenas were Woozle, Tigger and Rabbit. Can we get gemsbok back? I miss them. They are so striking. The Amur tigers are newly arrived Tonghua and Pam on likely a date that resulted in their first litter.

I only checked videos as late as 1995 just before the savannah reno.

Now that I have wasted a couple of hours on this back to that research I was doing.

It really is a pity that when edge of the night was converted to the reef that it wasnt expanded. The nature of the reef definitely demands a much bigger area. There should be rays, sea turtles and maybe a few small species of shark.
Most of the Zoo renovations were pretty positive (eg Polar Bears in Tundra Trek, the Gorillas in Africa Rainforest) but I hated the Barrier Reef so much (not only was the Reef itself so unimpressive but I used to love the old Edge of Night section). The African Cichlids is much better imo)

I also miss the Tapir, the Elephants, and the African Fur Seals (seals in particular why did they leave... penguins are nice but not the same).

The other thing that puzzles me is I swear one of the Pavilions used to have an "upstairs" section when I was a child... but after numerous years searching I can not fathom where it used to be (only one I can see is the Americas which now has an upstair part labelled employee only). Unless its just a false memory / imagination.

If I recall correctly, there was stairway that directly connected the African Burrows area with the larger overall area of the African Rainforest Pavilion, near the Pygmy Hippos (again, if I recall correctly - others would know for certain). Perhaps this is what you are thinking of?

@Esox, I believe you are correct. I have very faint memories of it but I believe thats where the blocked of staircase lead in the rainforest.

The other upstairs you could be thinking of @kav2001c might be the orang upper level viewing area.

Oh before they changed rainforest.... maybe....
I do not remember this at all but it would make sense

@TZFan no it def is not Orangatan. I do not remember Africa but I suspect Esox is correct

@kav2001c, I really thought it being the orangs was a stretch. The stairs to the burrows made far more sense for a fuzzy memory then a set of stairs still in use. Lol.

here's a really weird ad (at least I think that's what it is?) for the TZ from 1995 that Dolf found in his office and shared with us on insta today

@hyena142, that is hilarious! I dont recall any kinds of signs like that but then again I was a kid and not into reading the signs. I just liked the orangs. Kinda misleading though. She wasnt without a male. Dinding was still alive and a perfect match. He was the more preferable male for her not Molek. What happened happened with Jahe and Budi but they played it fast and loose with her hoping Dinding had one more in him but not wasting breeding time. Oh for those days where they didnt waste a female orangs reproductive years.
