Was at the zoo yesterday, Here are the updates, quite a few:

--Tiger Rat Snake Tank refurbished, it now holds at least 2 Gyanese Red Tail Pythons
--Marine Room under full construction in Americas, Angel fish, Pirhanas, Harlequin Frogs just to name a few are off display. All insects as well are getting their exhibits rebuilt.
--Warthogs are now on rotation with red river hogs in African Pavillion.
--Speaking of rotation, Babirusa, Tapir and Indian Rhino are rotating throughout the day in their pavillion
--Hornbills still off display, Monal Pheasants join the Nicobar Pigeons in their temporary home
--Juvenile Malayan Painted Turtles on display with adults
--2 baby West Caucasin Tur now on display

Quartz: What do you think a possible timeline (realistically) for the pandas would be? Will they be brought in after eurasia is complete? (speaking of which, any word on how this is going?)

If you go to the future developments thread there is a bunch of information about future developments thats where all this stuff would be.

Eurasia is slated to start in the spring and the panda exhibit is supposed to be incorporated within that. It has been said the pandas are coming in 2013 so I guess we will have to wait and see what happens.

I think the zoo can get all this done in that time period, as it was originally supposed to be completed (Eurasia I mean) in 2011.

I had a thorough look at the baby polar bear exhibit earlier today. It's set up in the smaller area to the right side of where the adult polar bears are. It looks like they built a fence about 12-14 feet away from the glass as well, I'm assuming so that none of the adult polar bears scare the cub. There is a smaller indoor section that is really well set up very much like a cozy little den. The den faces the viewing glass and is literally right against the glass. It's got a small open door for the cub to go in and out as it pleases to explore the outer area. I didn't see the cub today, but I did see lots of paw prints.

Guest Services said that management is likely going to delay the public viewing of the cub until the March Break now instead of sooner like some other articles suggested. Obviously that would bring in more money during the March Break. Money does rule this world, afterall.

I didn't even see this thread and made another one so I will post what I had in this one. On a side note we have a new guidebook!

Here is some updated news:
- the new trio of lions that we are going to be getting soon will not be put on exhibit with two males we currently have, they will be separated so the brothers will stay together for companionship and they could put Lindy with the new group but that would leave Jerroh along due to his mane which may cause tension between the new male, as it shows dominance (taken from the keeper talk)
- A LOT of construction in the Americas ANY aquatic exhibit is under renos, the whole insect wing, however the Marine room that was under construction is now completed!
- Now have a pair of Snowy Owls in the Tundra, hopefully we will have some babies soon
- The big fish tank in Australasia is not doing very well, some of the fish in there look extremely sick, hoping the zoo can fix that soon
- The Eurasian Garden Phase 2 is now complete, just have to wait for the growing to start in the spring and to fill up the pond, it look really cool, I can't wait to see all the cherry blossoms make this area look very pink!
- There was surveying in Eurasia being done when I was there I am assuming the zoo will go ahead with construction in the spring
- The reindeers have disappeared, perhaps santa never brought them back , there are now yaks in the old reindeer exhibit I assume the reindeer have moved to the Tundra, there was traces of animals in the Tundra exhibit however I never say any
- The Stingrays sign says closed for the season, so potentially coming back? - Correction they are coming back however just with rays.
- The polar bear cub was very active and extremely loud, the zoo has made this birth huge, more viewing into the den and signs EVERYWHERE!

I went yesterday for a lovely, warm day at the Zoo.

There was a pretty pregnant looking Lion-tailed macaque on exhibit. I'm not the only one that thought so either.

Is one of the snow leopards expecting cubs? It might have been just the way she was lying down, but she looked a lot rounder than the last time I saw her...

The polar bear cub is adorable. I didn't expect him to still be rather unsteady on his feet, but he seemed a little wobbly.

I miss Brytne so much. I cried after looking at Harimau Kayu. Are they going to keep him and bring in another female possibly? Or is that on hold while they shuffle around the tigers to accomodate the new Eurasia exhibits?

Ok -- so I have more questions than answers after visiting. LOL. My next trip probably isn't until May. I'm hoping for more babies by then! (I love newborn season at the zoo!)

Well, went to the zoo today for the first time since 2007 ! A few species have changed here and there, but pretty much everything that was new to me is obviously not for all else. Also got to meet a fellow Zoochatter, which (although brief) was very nice ! Rode the zoomobile for the first time also.

Just a few updates...

The pygmy hippo area was fully accessible today, and both hippo's were out. Abou still looked fairly large though, so I imagine she is still pregnant. Does anyone have any idea as to why they are now allowing the public to come so close ?

Stripes the male giraffe is living with females Twigga and Ginetta again, and I observed a breeding session between Stripes and Twigga. Hopefully she can produce one more calf as she is growing older.

Both Aurora and Nikita the female polar bears have bred with Inukshuk, so there is the possibility of cubs from both this winter (which hopefully is more successful this time around).

Demolition continues in Eurasia. The old scimitar oryx exhibit is basically gone, as is much of the old amur tiger exhibit. I have been told that construction on foundations and exhibits has begun

All this sounds great Zoogoer. I'd love to see another baby giraffe and baby pygmy hippos just so darn cute. Hopefully things will go better this time round for the polar bears or if Aurora just isnt meant to be a natural mother she will just abandon the cubs and not repeat her previous mistakes.

Glad you got to head back to the zoo and had a good time.

Keep your fingers crossed for this pygmy hippo to be a viable birth though. Abou bred several times at her old home (Mountain View Conservation Centre in B.C.), but was never successful. Really hoping things will work out this time, as we haven't had one born since 1999

One more thing to also add, only one spot-necked otter was on exhibit today. Are we down to just one now?

Otters

I think we're down to the one otter in Africa. I often didn't see him at all in the Winter. It's hard to tell but he might have an outdoor area behind that isn't really visible and I know that sometimes he can go into his little off exhibit indoor area.

I still remember seeing one of the otters going for a walk by the giraffes around 15 years ago and is one of my best memories of the zoo as a kid.

The ones in the Americas, next to the beaver, I've seen up to 3 in recent months. The last time I went to the zoo the other week however there was only 2. One was in the outdoor area and one in the smaller indoor pool. The one indoors looked very itchy and his fur was missing in a lot of places. I was wondering if there was something going on and that's why they had them separated with the door to the outside being closed.

I went to the zoo two days ago and part of the indoor African trail was closed. Does the zoo have caracals? The wombat exhibit was empty. I was really impressed with the African Rainforest Pavilion I think that the main indoor gorilla exhibit may be the best idoor gorilla exhibit that I have seen even the less naturalistic other indoor exhibit would be better than most zoos. the lemur exhibit was very nice and all the lemurs were very active. I thought the orangutan exhibit was pretty nice because all the orangs were climbing and playing with enrichment at the top of the exhibit and the ground had some small plants growing in it plus the ground looked like compacted earth. Even if most of the toronto zoos animal exhibits are indoors they do not feel like it because all the sun light and plants. I would personally rank the Toronto Zoo as my second favorite zoo (my number 1 is columbus) I wish i could have went a second day because almost all day it was thunderstorming so I had to skip the canadian domain section, the outdoor exhibits for the americas and the top part of Tundra Trek.

Re. caracals

No the zoo no longer houses its pair of caracal lynx. Instead, their exhibit is now home to african crested porcupine

Not sure this is the right spot to post it but just thought I'd put this out there for anyone not getting emails from the zoo but there is a 50% offer for up to six people from august 18 to september 3. I dont know if you need to present an printed email or just the code to get the one time deal. I cant remember when i signed up for the emails, im guessing sometime during the naming contests this year but heres the email contact they sent tzcommunications@torontozoo.ca the deal from. Maybe if you contact them they will sign up anyone who wants to join and you can benefit from the deal. Sorry again if this is the wrong place to post this.
