Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Privitization: Pros and Cons?

So- my mom called me in a tizzy informing me that as of yesterday; the City Council has decided to sell the Toronto Zoo:

I've heard arguments on both sides for the privitization on zoos. For pro; privitized zoos would have more funding, and thus would be able to do more (possibly adding more animals, expanding different areas, etc). On the con side; money invested into conservation research would possibly suffer. Just curious on people's thoughts on the issue :)
 
I'm really on the fenceline with this and hope their conservation programs aren't hurt in any way :( The best idea I heard for it was turning it and the Rouge Valley into a National Park.
 
The link to the web article is broken so I can't tell what "privatization" means exactly for the Toronto Zoo or if what happens in Canada when that happens is similar to the US. In the US what it seems to mean is that a non-profit organization, frequently the zoo's zoological society takes over operations that were previously paid for and staffed by a city or other government entity. Many of the major US zoos are operated in this manner including Bronx Zoo and all of the other NY city zoos and the aquarium, San Diego Zoo and Safari Park, Monterey Aquarium, and many others. It has not been a disaster for these organizations; quite the opposite. Hopefully if it is handled well it won't be for Toronto either, but I can see where it brings anxiety. The same thing is happening currently at my local Los Angeles Zoo.
 
DavidBrown- no worries; the article had nothing important other than the City Council had voted they would no longer be supporting the zoo and would sell it, it didn't go into any of the possibilities hence why I was curious to see what people on the forum thought :P Meaghan I agree I would love to see the zoo turned into a National Park- it's a beautiful area and one I hadn't considered as a possibility :)
 
I think that way the general public would take them more seriously for their conservation work as well as bring more awareness of the Rouge Valley itself.

Exactly, that is the issue with politicians then .... taking no responsibility of what comes next. As if to wash your hands off it!
 
Hey I heard a few rumours that the Toronto Zoo has been sold but I can't find any information to back these claims up anyone know anything one way or the other?
