Twycross Questions?

On my last visit to Twycross Zoo I managed to write down or photograph all the signage of the species I did manage to see after going onto Zooterliste the other day I have now come up with these no shows.

My question is are these species still in the collection even as off show or have these species now left the collection.

If anyone could let me know the ones that are still in the collection and maybe where they are around the zoo I would be very grateful.

I will be visiting on Sunday 20th May if all’s well and weather permitting I will also be writing a full review including one for the Wetlands Reserve.

What I miss on this visit I will be trying to see on a second visit in September this though will be mainly for the Wetlands Reserve.

Have there been any major new arrivals this year and which species have left the collection this year.

If anyone wants certain photographs then let me know asap please.

Well unless you didn't see the Gibbon House or Nursery,you will have seen all the Gibbon species you have listed,as for the other primates they are all still in the zoo,but they may not be labelled with the same common name as used at Twycross on zootierlist,which is why I always use scientific name in my notes as that is normally standard world wide,un-like common names.Pygmy Chimp is also called Bonobo.The waders used to be in the wonderfull aviary that you cannot see alongside Himalaya.In fact looking at the list with the exception of the waders I cannot see much that isn't still at the zoo.

Many thanks for the info Zoogiraffe but still can't rememberr seeing any of the Gibbons for some reason.

Did see the avairy you are on about and there was nothing in the exhibit.

On common names I still can't understand why all UK zoos have to use different names for the same species or is it to simple for them to do.

The gibbons are pretty much the first exhibits once you're through the Himalaya complex. Do you remember seeing any gibbons at all? They're split between just two houses so if you went to either house you should've seen at least three species.

That's English for you. Full of redundant and superfluous duplication of meaning and synonymy.

As I have stated elsewhere, it's not just UK zoos but anything involving animals and no different to any other field.

The scientific name is there to avoid confusion becuase the common names will never be consistent.

On my visit 2 weeks ago,as on previous ones,there were 5 species of gibbon in the main gibbon house,and a single muellers housed with a Lar in the nursery building more or less opposite the main house

Bats, sloth and green-backed heron are in the Tropical house.

Giant tortoises are in the Bonobo House.
