At Taronga Yesterday,

Monifa (Baby Pygmy) very shy with keepers attempting to coax her out with mum. Extreme tension with Snow Leopards mum, and to older cubs being seperated and the zoo trying to locate new homes for the cubs, apparantly she has had enough of her two teenagers. Female African Lion (Cub) is apparantly on heat but the zoo has no plans of breeding her with both males (Dad & Brother) not happy they are housing her seperatly from the pride. Bull Elephant enclousure draws closer to completion. Old Seal Theatre & Penguin Enclousure demolished. Both female Elephants clearly showing thier big tums, hopefully a easy safe arrival will happen late in the new year. The Andean Condor pair has been split, does anyone know who has disappeared & where? What ever happened to the baby Condor used in the QBE Bird Show? New Tiger appeared to be settling in well.

You were there yesterday? Lots of people?

You deserve a medal going to Taronga during school holidays in summer:). Very brave.:D

That's another reason I go on Christmas Day - last day before the madness that begins on Boxing Day. Over the next two weeks they will get 8-10,000 people per day (if the weathr is sunny). And when they get 10,000 through the gate, the close the gate.

Does the Taronga Zoo really close its gates after it hits an attendance figure of 10,000? A couple of days ago the Columbus Zoo in the U.S. had more than 27,000 visitors stream through the gates, but many of them were there just to take a short tour and see the zoo's Christmas lights.

The legal carrying capacity of Taronga is 10,000 people. And yes, when that number is reached no more people come into the zoo. I've been there when the roller door is pulled down. After a period of time - depending on how many people are leaving - more visitors are allowed in. But if it's a really busy day and the 10,000 are reached by around 11:00am, it may be a while before anybody else is allowed in.

Some years ago I was unfortunate enough to visit San Diego Zoo on it's Conception Day, when children get in for free. A total of 19,000 people through the gates that day, most seemed to be misbehaving school groups coming over the border from Mexico. Even though the zoo is big, it was still a shock to the system, and particularly congested around the primate enclosures and visitor amenities just inside the main gates.

That will keep upper management happy. Especially if this good weather continues.

new updates

I've just returned from a trip over to Newport aquarium. Just letting you all know heritage aviaries have gone. Completly knocked down apart from the original concreate skirt. The new cassy exhibit is coming along very fast and will be opening soon, along with the bull facility.

so what's going in where the avairies once stood?

i don't even know myself. Apparently Gorilla expansion is on the cards into the old seal theatre/penguins site, but we shall see. Unfortunatly due to the economic situation certain plans have been put on hold and budgets cut back so time scales i can't say. The current construction will continue however, so cassy's, new bull facility, koala encounters and car park.

Australian sealion pup born at the zoo.

Taronga's says goodbye to it's last Chilean Flamingo which passed away.
Australasia now only has 1 left at Adelaide Zoo, due to strict new quarantine laws it does not look like any new Flamingos will be imported for some time :(
