St. Louis's 1904 Flight Cage is pretty unique, as far as I know. In the design and architecture of the aviary itself, not the cypress wetland inside of it.
Brookfield: Tropic World as world's only warehouse-sized concrete jungle?
St. Louis's 1904 Flight Cage is pretty unique, as far as I know. In the design and architecture of the aviary itself, not the cypress wetland inside of it.
And the Bronx Zoo's old aviary, partially blown down in a 1995 storm and since replaced, looked much the same as the St. Louis flight cage.
Jungle World at the Bronx Zoo, while not as large (covers about an acre), is similar in concept and dates from a year after Tropic World. In fact, the then director of the Brookfield Zoo said it went beyond anything they had done (he was quoted by the NY Times)..
Here I would agree that Brookfield's is unique not for its size but in concept and visitor experience animal display. JungleWord is a very different animal and has been reproduced in Omaha and elsewhere. But who has reproduced Tropic World?
Some really cool exhibits! Not the best one but Edinburgh zoo do a " Zoo Late" which is an adults only night zoo - an alternative walk round for sure!
Lots of places do this now; ZSL have been running them for a few summers, first as 'Zoo Lates' but rebranded as 'Sunset Safari' last year to be more family friendly. Think Bristol run similar evenings over the summer.
