I was lucky enough to be a zoo keeper for the day yesterday at Dudley. While we were feeding the beautiful Itar, we were told that Gir (The resident lioness at Dudley) had been moved on to another zoo in order to bring in 2 new young females for Itar :)

Hopefully this will be very good news for the breeding programme at Dudley :D

Where has Gir gone and where are the new females coming from?

Unfortunately i dont remember :( - although i was feeding Itar meat by hand at the time so i think thats a worthy distraction :p

But i do know that they are hoping the females will arrive within the next few weeks.

Is Gir still in the UK?

Hope they'll get along better than the snow leopards.......

Are they still at loggerheads?

Its weird as they were together in June, but they must of had a disagreement and been separated. Was this "partnership" purely for companionship, as the female is too old to breed?

Last time I was there 2 weeks ago they were still apart, but I think Adrian said on here that they will try again to put them together.

Don't know too much about the partnership side of it, I'd guess that in the wild (and please anyone correct me if I'm wrong), they would live alone, so they wouldn't need to be together for partnership.

Do you know how old these females are?

No, we were just told they were closer to Itars age. Im hoping to go back at some point this week weather depending so ill see if any more info is available. At the moment the signs surrounding lion ridge still say 'Itar and Gir' - with only him in there now im assuming they'll have to put more info up :)

Might be the 2 females at Twycross then. If not then I guess they must be coming from oversea's.

Ahh I see, thanks. Ill be there soon, Ill have a beak and see whats going on.:)

When I went last (couple weeks ago) he was in and she was out. He was scent marking eveywhere inside she was doing the same outside.

I don't think they will be the 2 females at Twycross as I have been led to believe they are staying with the arrival of a new male at Twycross on completion of the new enclosure. Plus the new lion enclosure has just been started so they wouldn't get rid of two lions and have an empty enclosure for months.

Plans can and do change so don`t be surprised if they do move,as I have heard a rumour that they are going to Dudley but let me just say again it is a RUMOUR and NOT FACT,also are you 100% sure that work has started on the new Lion enclosure at Twycross because I`m 90% nothing has started on it yet.

I am very sure work has started in terms of moving dirt into the open enclosure that is to be built. If the lions do move to Dudley what will go in the lion enclosure at Twycross until the new enclosure is built. Will they get the new group in to integrate do you think? I heard that the new Twycross enclosure is going to have some females and a male in it.

I E-mailed Dudley Zoo yesterday with regards to Gir and the new females. Gir has indeed moved to Cotswold's and the new females are the 2 Edinburgh born sisters at Twycross! They are on loan to Dudley for now although the E-mail doesn't say if or when they will return to Twycross.

If they are on loan from Twycross they may not return then? Or might they return once the new enclosure is built? Are they being brought in for breeding? If they do breed, when they move them back to Twycross d'you think their cubs will come with them?

If this is not the case, dyou think twycross will just acquire some new Asiatic lions after the sisters have gone. Twycross would not have an empty lion enclosure for months. It may be until June or so that the new enclosure is built.

Very interesting thread. I myself really like the look of Dudley's Lion Enclosure especially with the Tecton Bird House added it looks great.
And I hope Twycross all the best with there new 'Sri Lankan Experience'.
Having looked at quite alot of the individuals about being paired together and seeing who there relatives where a few in some cases being quite close together (if im correct) And also regarding the current situation do people think new blood needs to be brought in? (I know i think it would be a good idea) - We need to keep the gene pool healthy but its trying to find unrelated lions thats the problem.
Chandani and Jake definately are the grandparents of the Asiatic Lion Breeding Programme!
Kind Regards,
