At the end of 2020, the USA received its 63rd national park: New River Gorge NP in West Virginia. There are several other types of protected areas managed by the national park service, such as national monument, national historic park, national scenic river, national seashore, etc. However those 63 that end in National Park (with no other words) have the strictest level of protection and are considered the crown jewels of our country's natural areas.
