Everyone's favorite popularity contest is back again! In recent years, I have actually avoided voting in the competition as I do not find the results all that telling of the true quality of a facility. Rather I enjoy viewing the results as a measure of local support for the facilities and a great way for the facilities to generate positive media support. Anyways, I post these threads yearly so others can participate if they want to in a convenient way and for civil discussion and criticism to occur. Yes there are only 19 nominees for this category for some reason.

Issues with this year's nominees:
  • The zoo category is missing Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum, The Living Desert Zoo, and Oregon Zoo. Replaced by Alaska Zoo, Philadelphia Zoo, and Woodland Park Zoo. Aside from the later, probably not indicative of most people's top zoo lists especially when Brevard Zoo is still on the list.
  • Dallas World Aquarium and National Aquarium were not nominated this year. While the replacements of Alaska Sealife Center and New England Aquarium are great facilities, the omission of these two is odd.
  • Best Safari Park is all over the place. This was an issue years ago but the category seemed to have gotten better last year when they removed the problematic facilities. All the nominees last year were of good quality at least. This year not so much. For real, Big Cat Rescue?!? Not only is this place of terrible quality, you can barely qualify it as a "safari park" when compared with the other nominees where the main attraction is some sort of vehicle ride to get closer to the animals. Big Cat Rescue is a series of metal cages for former pet cats. They aren't even open to public tours anymore. How can this even be a nominee for a TRAVEL website's "best of" contest? Absurd. Knowing the internet, this facility may very well win the category due to it's infamous owner and appearance in Tiger King.
  • Also missing from the Safari Park category are Fossil Rim and White Oak. How? Just how when Natural Bridge (VA) and BCR are included instead?
  • The Zoo Exhibit category is also problematic. Missing are universally well loved exhibits Sea Lion Sound (a former category winner), Russia's Grizzly Coast, Elephant Lands, and included are questionable choices Brevard Zoo Kayaking Tour and Maniac the Giant Crocodile. A couple zoos had one exhibit swapped with another at the same facility (Predator Ridge was swapped with Elephant Passage, Sea Lion Sound with River's Edge, Mission: Everglades with Crocodile Breeding Center) and Henry Doorly Zoo had a second nominee (Lied Jungle and Asian Highlands). This is potentially an issue For HDZ as voting is still limited to once per day. Asian Highlands is the winner of the past two year's contests. Adding Lied Jungle (as well deserved as it is) will pull votes from Asian Highlands making it highly unlikely either exhibit will win the category. Weird decision if you ask me.
Anyways, vote if you want as it is important for the marketing of these zoos. What are your opinions of the nominees this year?

What is the criteria when judging these zoos and aquariums? Is it based mainly on exhibits, or is it behind-the-scenes work like breeding successes? I haven't been to most of these zoos, but from the ones I have been to, and based on their exhibits, I definitely think Zoo Miami should be on the list, certainly more than Audubon, Philadelphia and Brevard. But again, bts successes might affect this. I know Audubon has an amazing Whooping Crane breeding center and I think Philadelphia also has many successes with certain animals, and of course the history as the oldest zoo in USA.
I don't see how NY Aquarium is even in the discussion for best aquarium. Very overrated facility. I'd rather nominate the underrated Maritime Aquarium.

Interestingly, one of the people involved in choosing these facilities is a zoo educator with what looks like an extensive history. The others are, of course, travel writers with the emphasis on kids and families, but having someone with an actual zoo background is unusual in these sort of magazine polls.

What is the Crocodile Breeding Center exhibit at Zoo Miami? I have no memory of such an exhibit at that zoo. Was it built as part of the Everglades complex?

The blurb about it describes it as a behind the scenes tour that is currently closed to the public due to covid.

Congrats to the winning facilities!

Those are some fascinating results!

Of the 10 best zoos, I'd personally only have 3 of them in my American top 10. Omaha, St. Louis and Columbus.

Of the 10 best aquariums, I'd personally only have 2 of them in my American top 10. Tennessee and Mystic.

I've only visited 5 of the 10 safari parks, but it's not exactly a world-class list.

SD did not make the top 10 for zoo or Safari Park? That's just not possible. I can see how it may not be a #1 in many people's eye, but they should be on the top 10 list every time. Brevard is #4? It's fine for a small zoo, but not a top 10.

As for aquariums, Wonders of Wildlife and Texas should not be a top 10 winner. They are both fine aquariums, but not top 10. Also, are "North Carolina Aquariums, NC" being treated as one facility or are they saying one is a winner? Either way they are not top 10 IMO.

I know in the end these voting things are all just by how many votes they can get, and have no real bar on the quality of the zoo/aquarium, but really.....

I really wonder who voted for these results exactly. You would think if it was just all random people, the most famous zoos like San Diego and Bronx would always be on top. Maybe USA Today was sick of the same zoos always being in the top 10 every year and decided to mix things up?

Facilities had varying social media outreach when it came to this context. USA Today only nominated the facilities but it was up to each place to garner support and to remind people to vote everyday. I do not think SD or Bronx mentioned the contest at all on social media where Cincinnati always has a vicious mob of online supporters that boost them. Interesting thing I just thought of was previous winner Fort Worth did not make the top 10 this year. They for some reason did not push the contest like they had previously.

Ah, so its just social media pushing rather than any important mentric. I think we should all troll the nation and vote in Beaver Springs Fishing Park as the top zoo next year.

Can't do that either. USA Today has a panel that nominates 20 facilities (see the OP) and then opens voting to everyone for a month to get the Top 10.

Not sure how many of you have been to Wonders of Wildlife, but I was very impressed by it and absolutely think it is at least a top 10 aquarium.

But nonetheless rankings are also subjective and everyone’s opinion is different and that’s ok.

Well neither of the top 3 aquarium for most people here makes it so that say something

The results are really just who has the most social media pull and can get most people to vote. Some of these places really push the voting in newsletters, on their website, and all over social media, while others barely mention it. Wonders of Wildlife is always near the top and they heavily advertise the competition, same with Smokies.

You're right, that place looks pretty cool, I had it confused with Aquarium at the Boardwalk in Branson MO.

I haven't been to enough of the top aquariums to judge, but I would agree it is very good. What makes it stand out is how immersed you are in the environment. However, I felt it ended pretty abruptly and likely may not be quite big enough to compete with the true giants. For me I was about 2 to 2.5 hours in and that was it and it was a bit surprising.

I also think you have a similar argument to the one made about Dallas World Aquarium with it though. It often feels more like a zoo in a building than an aquarium.

EDIT: It also doesn't seem very well known on this site yet as its still pretty new and not many have visited.
