Vancouver Aquarium Vancouver Aquarium Species List (August 2024)

It's been about 7 years since I last visited the Vancouver Aquarium and with all the stuff with ownership that went on in 2021 / 2022 (iirc), my expectations were on the lower end, especially since (no shade towards the media team) but the website only displays like 20 species so it's hard to grasp how much there really is. I'm happy to say that the Aquarium blew my expectations away, mainly with the species selection. So many species I wasn't expecting to see in the smaller tanks and I think a lot of the displays were also well put together.
Disclaimer: Due to time constraints, and also because it was insanely busy, I didn't get the best look at all the displays so I may be missing a few species that weren't signed. A lot of this list is going off what was signed, which did look to be pretty up to date. I also wasn't able to stop by the Discovery Lab, from what I could see it was a lot of the same species that were already out on public display but there also might be a few smaller species missing from there. But this should cover at least 95% of species that are at the Aquarium.

Notes: Species that aren't signed but are housed in the exhibit will be in Green text.
I'm hesitant to put anything in
Red since I didn't get a thorough look.
Also when listing off species, when there's a space between species, it means it's a new tank / different tank. So species that are grouped together in the same tank won't have any spaces between them when being listed.

Now to start...

Ocean Courtyard: No exhibits

Closing | I hope everyone enjoys this list of Canada's Largest Aquarium. Their collection is so much more than I thought it was (took about 5-ish hours between yesterday and today to finish this) and holds a lot of rarities not found in other aquariums. If anyone has any corrections, feel free to correct away. A lot of these latin names were hand typed so I may've missed a letter here or there. This should be the most up to date list of what the Aquarium holds (date of visit: August 14th). So I hope anyone going can use it as a reference on what to expect.

Thanks for going through the work of writing this up!

Wow, this is an unexpectedly excellent collection! Vancouver was very low on my list of priorities, but seeing this list, it is now top three on the US aquariums I want to visit! Really excellent species list, almost every gallery has something interesting. I also see a lot of similarities collection-wise with the other big west coast aquariums of CAS and Monterey.

Thanks for the epic species list and that must have taken a long time to type out. Vancouver Aquarium has struggled to attract large visitor numbers since the deaths of the two remaining Beluga Whales and the Covid years. Gone are many larger animals: Beluga Whales, Pacific White-sided Dolphins, Harbour Porpoises, the temporary Walruses, Green Sea Turtles, African Penguins and Zebra Sharks. The focus has been on smaller creatures and those aren’t always popular with the general public.

Agreed, heard at least 10 people asking what happened to the penguins and whales and sounding a bit disappointed afterwards. It is nice to see the Seals with pretty large spaces though, it was cool to see the group of Fur Seals zoom around.
I'm hoping they bring back the Zebra Sharks, I don't remember them at the Aquarium from when I last visited but if they're able to jump into the ReShark program, that'd be pretty neat since I believe Ripley's is apart of it.

You may have missed Acanthascus dawsoni/ Sharp-lipped glass sponge, Calliostoma ligatum/ Blue top snail, and Amphissa columbiana/Wrinkled amphissa. Thanks for including the algae! Amazing species list!

Also to include, I did forget Arctic Char that are in a circular tank in the Arctic Section.

THANK YOU, I was wondering what that one vase looking Sponge was in I think it was one of the BC Coast tanks, maybe with the Feather Stars.
Unfortunate that no one seems to know so far what that Arctic Fish is I posted in the Animal ID section, it was one of the only active Arctic fish next to Lumpsuckers.

BC Wild Coast & Stellar's Bay:
The outdoor areas are admittedly where I get mixed up on what is in the 'BC Wild Coast' and 'Stellars Bay'. Instead I'll just combine the two since they're mainly marine mammals and not much else.
  • Sea Otters (does not specify whether they're Northern or Southern) | Enhydra lutris

They're northern sea otters. All of them are rescues from Alaska or British Columbia with the exception of Rialto, who was rescued off the Washington coast and transferred from Seattle Aquarium.

I was surprised they no longer have penguins and I wish they'd bring them back along with the sharks. Still a first-rate aquarium and the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Society does essential work:
