Hot on the heels of today's announcement in regards to the May 18th opening of "Penguin Point", I received the aquarium's magazine "Waters" in the mail. There are many pages devoted to the $85 million revitalization that will be concluded by 2016, and with the overhaul of the aquarium (built in 1956) it will maintain its unofficial status as one of the 10 best aquariums in North America.
Highlights include:
- a new sea otter exhibit
- salmon hatchery
- new animals such as sea birds and beavers
- larger outdoor pools and a flexible pool between the B.C. Wild Coast and Canada's Arctic exhibits (white-sided dolphin and beluga pools)
- 34,000 square feet of additional public space
- new main entrance and large entrance plaza
- new gallery that will feature rotating exhibits
- refurbishing aging infrastructure behind the scenes
