Varanids family

Hello, everybody.
I'm wondering if any zoo's in Europe houses any goannas or monitors from the family of Varanids?

Do any of you keep this fantasic group of lizard as pets?

I've got one Varanus Gouldii Flavirufus or Northern Sand Goanna, one Varanus Spenceri or Spencer's monitor and one Varanus Acanthurus or Spiny-tailed monitor.

Sounds like you have your hands full with monitors. I love them, but would never keep them. I watched a program about a man who was killed by his four nile monitors who had free roam in his house. I hope you more careful :)

Yeah, mine are only out when I clean their enclosure and then I put them back in. My Spencer's Monitor only slaps ya with her tail, she's nice to handle when you have picked her up. My male that I had, was a bit smaller then her and the female would try to dominate him, but males grow alot faster and larger then females as well.

Have you heard of a monitor species called Lace monitor?

What was the name of the program you watched about some guy killed by their own nile monitors and by any chance would it be on the internet somewhere, so i can watch it?

Lace Monitors are awesome, deinately my favourite Varanid. They used to be in NZ zoos, but have all died out now, but I always make sure I see them when I visit Australian Zoos that keep them.

Why do you ask?

I have heard of Lace Monitors, no need to be rude to zooboy28 though.

I beleive it was called Fatal Attractions, from Animal Planet. Not sure if you could find it in Australia.

Can you keep them as pets, that's what I was actually asking? Sorry if i didn't actually ask that. That's what I was inquiring about.

I know a pet shop that sold Bosc/Savannah monitors, (UK) they can be quite nasty when young but seem to tame down alright.
as for pet monitors in general, this site seems to have some decent info on temperament and availability in general, but is a bit vague in other ways:
VARANIDS: MONITOR LIZARDS

In the UK, V. exanthematicus and V. acanthurus turn up quite often in reptile shops. I've seen various other species as well over the years - V. niloticus and V. rudicollis among others - my best local shop (Wharf Aquatics - Tropical Marine Pond Fish Aquariums Reptiles Shop - superb fish/reptile shop) is currently offering 'peacock monitors', which I believe are Auffenberg's Monitor, V. auffenbergi - a species I've only ever seen once before.

There are some very interesting monitors being kept in private hands in the UK and Europe and bred with much greater success than those kept in zoo's such as V.mertensi, V.melinus, V.yuwonoi and V.gilleni to name but a few.

Except Komodo's and maybe Salvadors, Varanids tends be found as exhibit enhancements or in reptile houses rather than show stealing exhibits of their own.

I often nip in Wharf Aquatics for a "zoo fix" if I'm in the area. It's like a free well-stocked aqauarium and reptile house (in terms of stock, not presentation). I've seen some nice bits passing through there over the last few years.
