On February 24th, the zoo announced they acquired a (0.1) white-cheeked gibbon named Henley which is now on exhibit.

On February 25th, the zoo announced they acquired a (1.0) white-faced saki monkey named Macho which is now on exhibit.

I was visiting Virginia and went to the zoo today. Pretty disappointing because construction closed off a most of Trail Of The Tiger and a portion of World Of Reptiles. Many additional species in open areas were off-exhibit or otherwise unseen. The zoo at least realizes the reduced visitor experience and is selling discounted tickets.

It's all on their website, parts of Asia have been closed since last October while they work on the boardwalk. World of Reptiles has never been 100% open, they've been continuing to add on to it.
 
I am stuck between visiting the Virginia or North Carolina Zoo for an upcoming trip and was wondering what species (if any) the Virginia Zoo houses that very few or no other zoos in the US house. When I visit the Asian area of the zoo should be reopened.

Sun bear and Asiatic black bear are two species that come to mind that you don't see a whole lot in AZA zoos these days.

Asia trail is reopened, World of Reptiles conservatory is closed for the foreseeable future as they are doing some epidemiological investigation.
Train should be reopened this week, they had a soft run through with the new electric engine last Friday.

Are you able to elaborate on epidemiological investigation?

They had a few mammals of different species pass away who were exhibiting the same symptoms so they're trying to track down what it might have been, if it's been contained, and if it's going to spread to other species or possibly zoonotic.

Noelle the Masai Giraffe gave birth on August 24 to a male calf named Henry. The father is the late Billy, who passed away earlier this year.

The Virginia Zoo on Instagram: "Oh, baby! Meet the newest addition to our Masai Giraffe herd, Henry. Henry was born to our 10-year-old female, Noelle, at the Virginia Zoo on Aug 24. Henry's father is our late giraffe, Billy, who was loved by many and unfortunately passed away earlier this year. “This calf is so special to us as a team as it is the last offspring of Billy,” Emily Spence, Assistant Curator of the Africa Department said. “The loss of such a longstanding staple of the Africa department has been difficult, but we are all so happy to know that his legacy is going to live on one last time. We can’t wait to share this calf with the zoo community in the near future.” We couldn't be more excited to welcome Henry and can't wait to see him grow! Surprise! Virginia Zoo celebrates birth of new baby white rhino – Daily Press

The Virginia Zoo has welcomed its newest family member, a baby southern white rhino. She is now the fifth member of the zoo’s herd.

The baby, a female, was born in the early morning of Nov. 9. She and her mother Zina will stay in their night barn for the next few weeks for their keepers to monitor them and ensure they are bonding.
