Last weekend again a new collection visited, this time a specialized collection of pheasants. In earlier days every ( or almost every ) zoo had a nice collection of pheasants but now-a-days only a limited number of species is seen with some regularity ( Tragopan, peacock, monal, gold- and silver are normaly seen ) but there are so many more species !
At the Rooie Hoeve around 60 ( sub ) species are kept and I was realy impressed by this beautifull collection.
The aviaries are some-what old-fasioned but the birds looked fine and healthy and also the breeding-results seem to be quite good.
De Rooie Hoeve is also involved in several conservation projects and althrough only a small number of visitor find this collection every year ( the owner told me they have around 4.000 visitors annualy ) the collection is surtainly worth a visit. Some well-known larger collections are in the direct neighboorhood so a visit can be combinated with going to Overloon, Best ore Zie-ZOO Volkel.
