Today was an Open Day at the UK Wolf Conservation Trust and, as I only live half an hour away, I thought I would visit. For those who don't know, there are twelve wolves at the Trust, housed in three very spacious enclosures. The first enclosure houses Torak (alpha male, hybrid European/Canadian wolf), Mosi (alpha female, Canadian wolf), Duma (female, Canadian wolf) and Lunca (female, European wolf). Enclosure 2 houses Arctic wolf cubs Massak (male), Pukak (male) and Sikko (female) who were born in March and arrived from Canada in June. Enclosure 3 houses Motomo (alpha male, European wolf) and Mai (alpha female, Canadian wolf) with a separate corner enclosure for their three cubs Nuka (male), Tundra (female) and Tala (female) who were born in May. There is a window into Enclosure 1 and a raised observation platform for Enclosure 3 which both afford better views of the wolves.
I was impressed with the size and layout of the three enclosures, and of the knowledge of the staff who were all on hand to answer any questions raised by visitors.
Other animal-related stalls at the Open Day included Quirk's Animal Roadshow, who had brought various animals which could be handled such as bearded dragons, uromastyxes, snakes, tarantulas, rabbits and guinea pigs. There was a birds of prey display (I don't know who the company were though) which involved a harris hawk, ferruginous hawk and a peregrine x saker falcon. Static bird displays included the aforementioned birds plus a European eagle owl, a second harris hawk, a barn owl and a peregrine falcon. Karluk Siberian huskies brought along eight huskies which could be touched and photographed.
There were a lot of visitors so I imagine the day was a success.
