Hi everyone,

I am to visit Chester zoo in october and will be travelling by train from sheffield. I need to get from the train station to the zoo. Approx how long does this take to walk (We walk fast) or what bus service do we need to get from the station, or how much would a taxi cost? Any suggestions greatful. Many Thanks,

Tom Zoo

You wouldn't be able to walk from the train station to the zoo. Chester zoo is located in Upton and the train station is close to Chester city centre

You could walk/take a taxi/take a bus to Chester's bus depot and catch the number 1 bus (I think it's the number 1 bus) which goes to Ellesmere Port. This stops directly outside the zoo's gates and costs about £4.50 for a day ticket

However, if the zoo is continuing with the shuttle bus service after the trial period has ended, then you could catch this. It is free if you show a return rail ticket and drops you outside the zoo's pedestrian gate (on the other side of the zoo to the "normal" gate). This bus is caught from outside the hotels which are opposite the train station.

The other option is to get on the Liverpool train from Chester, which stops at Bache station. This is about a 20min walk from the zoo's pedestrian entrance (which I've walked many, many times - let me know if you need directions) and the number 1 bus CZJimmy mentions stops on the main road outside Bache station (which runs to the main entrance).

I would suggest that the easiest option is train from Sheffield to Chester, train to Bache then the number 1 bus towards Ellesmere Port.

Which day are you going?

I just did a search for a Saturday via Manchester Piccadilly and the return fare from Sheffield to Bache is £31.10. By booking from Sheffield to Manchester Piccadilly and again from Manchester Piccadilly to Bache the fare is £12.00 and £12.90 making £24.90.

If you pay at Sheffield station they can issue the Manchester to Bache ticket at the same time.

If you book in advance it may be cheaper to book Sheffield to Bache as one fare.

I do this exact journey all the time. It takes me 20-25 minutes at my pace to walk from Bache. You could easily get the number 1 though.

I always get a £20.55 return with a railcard (so presumably the £31 that rob found), which is always the same price (though I am not sure about on the day) and I have to change at Stockport and Chester. And also sometimes Crewe, but it's no slower to do so. Going via Liverpool is simpler and a valid route with the non specific tickets but takes longer.

I only realised this last time I went, but the only ticket I am ever offered is actually valid for a month on the return trip. I have never looked if it is cheaper to do split fares, but it is one trip I take where singles are not cheaper and not being tied to specific trains for once pleases my paranoid side.

I know it is no extra to get to Bache than it is to Chester if you buy it as one ticket. Since the trips I work out always go via Stockport not Manchester you may wish to look into that as well.

I had not considered travelling via Crewe, but it seems to be the same fare.

A direct ticket between Stoke and Bache costs more than Stoke to Chester and Chester to Bache, but the fare between Stoke and Chester is a special offer.

Hi, When you go from sheffield to chester, when you have to change at stockport, what platform do you catch the stockport to chester train?

@tomzoo123 I *want* to say 2 but i can't remember. I know I had to go under the underpass to swap to it.

Normally platform 2, but it could also leave from platform 1. So you're going via Northwich then? It takes 1 hour 15 minutes.

Well it seems like its either one or two but pointing more at 2. Are 1 and 2 both under the underpass. Im going from sheffield and have to change at stockport. Thanks guys.

You will arrive from Sheffield at platform 3 or 4 (normally 3). Go down the stairs and under the underpass and platform 1 and 2 are on the other side. As you climb the steps platform 1 is on the left and 2 on the right. There is a destination board by the stairs and you just look for the time of the train you are catching and it will show the platform number.
