As far as I could see there where no topics yet on vogelpark Ruinen. Has anyone of the dutch zoochatters been there? I have visited the park yesterday, I was rather suprised. I wanted to go there because of the animal list on zootierliste. It has the only (known) captive raquet-tailed roller and some other interesting species that I hadn't seen before!

It is a rather small park, the owner is a bird enthousiast the park is located is his back yard ;) It has around 30 to 35 exhibits, most containing birds, but a few mammal species present(Black-tailed prairie dog and 2 small squirrel species. I only came for the birds! The park in first place is dedicated to shorebirds(mostly from the Netherlands). There are a few interesting species to see, a few lapwing species including African wattled lapwing, Spur-winged lapwing, Northern lapwing and Chilean lapwing. Also present are black-tailed godwit, common redshank and Eurasian curlew. They have a few parrot species most interesting to me where, meyer's parrot, brown-headed parrot and hahn's macaw. Furthermore they have a good deal of songbirds, a bunch of starling species, some weavers, crows(including green magpie and San Blas jay) and other small species. They have been in the news last year for breeding crested screamers. Of the 6 species of rollers, they have 4. Of which the raquet-tailed roller is the rarest in zoos(as said above) My biggest suprise though was the amount of smaller ground-doves that are seldom seen in zoos, they have blue ground-dove, bare-faced ground-dove, croaking ground dove and the slighty larger emerald-spotted wood-dove.

All in all, a small park with plenty of interesting species! If you are near Ruinen, go take a look!

I will post some phot's when the Ruinen section is added to the gallery.

I live in Emmen, which is quite close to Ruinen. But I have never been there, since I do not have much interest in birds. Did you also visit the Emmen Zoo?

I've been to Ruinen and were responsible for many of the entries in Zootierliste (among others, the raquet-tailed roller, visit 8-5-2011).

I was also surprised by the number of unusual species, most notably for me the many (5?) pairs of green woodhoopoe's. It's not worth a million mile de-tour, but if you're close it's quite worth a visit.

When i was there, they also seemed to have one of the sand-grouse species, but I forgot to identify it properly. Did you manage to see one?

@Johnny, no I did not visit Emmen, I have been to Emmen last year again after a few years, but I was shocked. It was still the same as 5 a 6 years ago. I didn't like it at all!
@jwer: Ok, cool! You're quite right, they do have a large number of seldom seen species. I was really surprised to see a few species of small ground-dove, those where certainly not on zootierliste(they are now ;) ) They still have atleast 2 pairs of green woodhoopoe's. No, I haven't seen any sandgrouse unfortanetly. They did have a pair of capercaillie, with the male being trying to defend his territory. And they have atleast 2 pairs of black grouse although I only saw 1 female.

You are right, when you're near Ruinen it is certainly worth the visit, but it is not overly spectaculair, although I have a feeling the owner is always looking to add new species to his collection. For me, a trip once a year is more then enough, but I had fun and saw some new species so that was good.

In the past weeks multiple species have been born/hatched among others Red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus), Collared pratincole (Glareola pratincola), Black-necked stilt (Himantopus mexicanus), Eurasian Oystercatchers (Haematopus ostralegus), Swinhoe's striped squirrels (Tamiops swinhoei) and Pied avocets (Recurvirostra avosetta).
