Brookfield Zoo What are the rocks in the camel habitat?

Going to the zoo many time I always see the small man made rock outcrop at the back of the habitat. I assume it was from a previous resident, but it so small and appears to have a gate behind it. Anyone have some history that can help answer this?

It’s an easy mistake to make for new members, you’ll learn the ropes soon enough:)

I reckon you've seen salt licks. Camels lick them to obtain sodium and other nutrients like
phosphorus, sodium, calcium, iron, zinc and many other trace elements. They.need salt for the proper functioning of their bones, muscles, nervous system and circulatory system.

As far as I know, those exhibits have always been used for hoofstock. It’s possible there may have been a different or smaller hoofstock species previously that used that mock rock outcrop. If you’re at all interested in Brookfield Zoo history, I’d recommend picking up a copy of Let the Lions Roar or the Images of America Brookfield Zoo book. I, myself, have the latter and hope to pick up the former. I’ll check through it to see if I can find anything else.

I see you also watched the Brookfield Zoo Recreation in Planet Zoo video. :D

Hooftsock have been there since the zoos conception, so they could have just been for a decoration. The salt lick idea is also very possible.

For future reference, feel free to ask one off questions like this on the main Brookfield Zoo thread. It just helps to keep things more organized. Welcome to site by the way! Always good to have new members.
