What did you go to college for?

Like the title states, what did you go to college for? I always see all these in depth discussions, and honestly I feel intimidated to jump in seeing as I'm just high school student going to college in the fall (for zoology!) and I feel I can't contribute much to any of them, even though I volunteer at a local zoo and told I'm very knowledgeable about animals haha. (Just goes to show the lack on knowledge I when it comes to certain aspects of the field haha) Are many people who use and partake in this site zoology majors as well? And if possible include your profession!

@Edit: And a better name for the title would have been 'What was your major in college?', stupidity on my part, sorry.

Social Studies Education 5-12 is my "content area" (not the same as a major but close enough)

I have an AS (associate in Science), BS (bachelor in science) and a MSE (masters in secondary education) in that field. I also possess an Alabama Class A (Alabama teaching certificates go C - Temporary B - Bachelors A - Masters AA - Advanced) Teaching Certificate with National Teacher Certification boards as well.

If you are going to spend 4 years and 80k (at minimum) I would suggest doing a Life Sciences Teaching Program. That way you have a real career option lined up as well, and Science teachers have all kind of grants/scholarships to take some of the financial burden away. Not to mention you teach and a good chunk of your student loans get paid off in 4 years of minimum payments, and you do any type of public service job and in 10 years (of minimum payments) you get any amount no matter how large forgiven.

Not to mention teaching can also be a great foot in the door for running Education programs at the Zoo either as a career or a 2nd job during summer breaks to boost income.

Thanks for the info! Where exactly is the program given? At the college you will be attending or at another institute?

I went to uni to party and meet girls. Getting a degree was merely a by-product.

You have much to teach us. Ok, you have much to teach me. I went to college and never went to a party or get any girls. I did college wrong I think.

I said that's what I went to uni for. I didn't say I was very successful at it. :D Probably explains why I actually graduated!!

I'm starting college in the fall too! I'm signed up to major in Environmental Science...but I'm thinking about switching to Biology or maybe minor in Biology. I wanted to major in Zoo & Conservation Science...but alas, I couldn't go to the college that offered that because it was too expensive. Environmental Science/Biology is the closest thing I can major in at the college I'm going to.

I want a degree in Zoology, which here means studying Science and then choosing Zoology as your "Moderatorship" in your 3rd and 4th years. I've just finished 1st year and didn't like it that much (I had to do a broad array of different modules, including ones like Chemistry and Maths that made me want to die, doing them for hours each day when I'm just not that interested in them).

But all the 3rd and 4th year Zoology students I've met love it and say it's worth the earlier slog.
